Our Santa Clara Valley sectional is bringing the Bermuda Bowl bound Rose Meltzer team to you, beginning Friday, September 28, at 1 p.m. at the San Jose Masonic Temple. I hear Kyle Larsen, Chip Martel, Lew Stansby, Alan Sontag, and Peter Weichsel will make themselves available to answer your bridge questions. Weichsel will give a talk on Saturday at 12:15 p.m.

I’m told if you want to find out about local tournaments, call (408)-810-CARD (2273). Watch for notices at the San Jose Bridge Club about the time and format of a unit game on October 21.

Faye Parsons is raising the bar in her club games. The Sunday evening game is now open to 299ers. The Thursday evening game is open to 499ers. She offers lessons before each game.

Let’s look back on past triumphs. Cole Powell got the news I never did about the Oakland sectional and provided a comprehensive list of our winners in his East Bay Forum column last month. At the San Francisco sectional, strat tops were recorded in pair games by Sherry Waki, Steve Chen, Will Watson, and Bill Langlois. Winning their Swiss brackets were teams with K.P. Cheng and Jeffrey Hu, Tania Moalem and Doug Hong, and Joy Sarma. (For those in Tania’s Ace of Clubs bracket, she’s rejoined our unit.)

The All Western Santa Clara regional has come and gone. I enjoyed late night bridge discussions though they didn’t help me the next day. Don Nemiro and Jeanne Becht kicked off the event by winning the charity pairs. A number of people earned strat tops in two-session senior pair events: Ann Mollard, Beverly Wright & Jean Power, Sabina Siem & Rita Tingley, and Louis Martin, Jr. Members too numerous to mention had section tops.

In 299er pair games, strat tops went to Irwin & Marion Wentzien, Steve Conaway (twice!), Jack Parks, Shirley Foreman & Alex Tampilang, Robert & Joan Rouse, Sam Morley, Shi Wei Lu, and Mervin & Shirley Falk.  The Falks earned their first gold points when they finished second in their flight with Don Hayden and Ruthann Critchfield in senior Swiss teams. Do you remember your first gold points?

In other Swiss team games, Robert Dannels’ team was first in the X flight. First in the D flight were Bernard & Mildred Brown, Rita Randolph & Shirley Anderson. First among the 299ers were Alex Tampilang & Shirley Foreman, Mike & Jan Sullivan.

In the two-day open pairs, Rose Meltzer & Peter Weichsel finished 6th.  Ed Barlow finished 8th. In the individual money game, Gigi Spinazze and Steve Chen placed highly after two of three sessions.

The following unit members were on winning knockout teams: Rose Meltzer; Tania Moalem & Mostafa Hafezi; Chin & Melody Chao and Chee Tung; Louis Martin & Andrew Wulfhorst; Ivy Chueh & Jim Tseng; Jeanne Becht & Tim White; Robert & Linda Caren. My apologies for missing anyone.
