29 tables of players, that’s 126 people, braved the rain and the temporarily limited parking at the Campbell Community Center to attend our unit’s December holiday party. The unit provided turkeys cooked by President Dan Turkus and Vice-President Ray Yuenger. (I’m starting my re-election campaign early. If you want a turkey, vote for me.) The members provided a variety of potluck dishes and wines. Everything I was able to get to was tasty.

4 tables of players showed up without signing up. With some last-minute rearranging we were able to accommodate everyone, though Will Watson had to hop over chairs to fulfill his directing duties. In the ensuing bridge game, first overall were Faye Parsons & Joyce Hatfield. First in B were T-C Yang & Steve Chen. First in C were Fia & Ben Bosklopper. A number of people pitched in to set up and clear out the rented room and carry supplies back to the Bridge Center. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event so enjoyable.

My last column reported all but the final days of the nationals in Phoenix. The rest of the story is that Faye Parsons & Bonnie Beardsley took first in a senior pairs event. Rose Meltzer’s team won a knockout.

STAC week took the place of most sectionals in December. At the Sacramento sectional, Tania Moalem & Dana Brown were 2nd in their stratification in a two-session pairs game.

Having driven to the Reno regional, I’ll recommend attending . . . by air. What should have been a four-hour drive took seven due to holiday traffic and winter snow. Some unit members were rewarded for braving the elements. On one winning knockout team were Gary Porter, T-C Chen & Fang Wu. This team was also first in its Swiss flight. On another winning knockout team were Shih-Ming Shih, Steve Chen, & Mindy Foos. On another was Bruce Luttrell. Other unit members had first-place finishes in side pairs and a number of second-place finishes in pair and team events. Results are on the Internet and may appear in this paper.

As I write the Monterey regional has just finished. I have results for every day but the last two. Good weather blessed this event. Lynn Yokel & Ray Yuenger started the event by taking 1st in the charity pairs. Mich Ravera was first in his strat. On winning knockout teams were Don Nemiro & Fran Dickman; Richard Sarsfield & Tania Moalem; Rita Randolph, Shirley Anderson, & Sherry Waki. First in their strats in pair events were Boyer Chu, Ginn Hua & Fung Bao, ChingLing Jim Tseng, Richard Pitzer & Ellie Hall-Pitzer.

Since I’m writing in advance of the next board meeting, I have no upcoming unit news for you. Directors should be announcing unit games at the club.

If you want me to report more, let me know what to say. Corrections, comments and news are welcome at (408)379-7717 and rayyuenger@starband.net. Old columns appear under “old stuff” at www.sjbridge.org.
