March over to your calendar now and mark down the Santa Clara Valley sectional, slated for March 31 through April 2. Come check out the convenient new location, the San Jose Masonic Temple, that will remind many of the old location, the Scottish Rite Temple, since they are within shouting distance of each other. Newcomers are welcome on Saturday, April 1, to an orientation talk at 12:15 p.m. and a game at 1 p.m. Our ad elsewhere in this paper has more details.
All hail Rose Johnson-Meltzer, who captained a team, including Peter Weichsel, who won the Orbis World Transnational contest in Bermuda. Mr. Weichsel will be giving at talk at our sectional at noon on April 1. No fooling.
Also calendar Sunday March 26 at 1 p.m. for our unit game honoring mini-McKenney and Ace of Clubs achievers.
Sorry, I do try to keep my name out of the news, but . . . . The Tuesday night game at the San Jose Bridge Club has three new directors, Neal Webb, Lynn Yokel, and yours truly. One of us should be available if you need a partner on a Tuesday. Morris “Mojo” Jones is letting his new bride entice him away after four years of running the game quite well. Thanks for your dedication, Mojo. This completes a circle, as Lynn and I began our duplicate careers (with other partners) in what was then the Tuesday night novice game in pre-Mojo days.
Mojo will stay with us in spirit in several ways. (Computerphobes, skip this paragraph.) He is hosting the new website for the unit, now known as sjbridge.org. He is also reviving the long-dormant bridge e-mail list. Address subscription requests to owner-sjbridge@whiteoaks.com.
My last column described the first two days of the January Monterey regional. Here’s the rest of the results. In two-session games, James Long finished first, Sathya Bettadapura finished second in Friday’s Flight A open pairs; Marshall Yancey and Richard Reitman were second in Saturday’s open pairs; Bin Dai was first in flight B.
Teams involving Jim Hayashi and Gail Rosenthal won their knockout brackets. Flight and section tops were earned by Henry Zoellner, Victor Rivkin, Charlotte & Charles Sharples, Steve Bosma & Mostafa Hafezi, Gigi Spinazze, Lynn Yokel & Ray Yuenger, Ted Richmond & William Reister, Jr., Stan Batiste, George Pledger & Melinda Foos, Joyce Sogg & Gabi Pani, Pat Hannah & Art Fonda, Shih-Ming Shih, Dave Pankratz, Joyce & William Keckler.
In the San Francisco sectional, George Pledger and Melinda Foos had a great Saturday afternoon, winning Flight C and coming in second in B out of 76 pairs. Leon Lee was first in his direction in the under-100 pairs in the evening. Kenneth Anderson had a flight top in his direction. Leila Sink’s Swiss team was first in their bracket.
I tried, but I couldn’t keep Neal Webb from becoming (unofficially) a Bronze Life Master in Monterey. Cheers, partner.
