After last month’s full column of winners from our recent sectional, you readers may welcome this opportunity to rest your eyes with a short column.

As you’ll see if you play at the San Jose Bridge Club, May is the month for nominating directors for the unit board. June will be the time to cast your ballot, if you are a Unit 507 member. The terms for half of the 12-member board expire each year. The membership appreciation dinner will be in July, not June, as we do not want to schedule it against the full plate of local June sectionals.

I hope you like the way a group of directors and consultants rearranged the club one Saturday morning. It looks more organized and spacious to me.

Carole Dietz and George Pledger hosted a very successful pro-am unit game in April. I’ve never seen 21 full tables fit into the club. There were some technical difficulties in rounding up enough tables and chairs to get started, but the time was well spent with new partnerships discussing their convention cards. As much as people wanted to learn, it seemed the more experienced partners were willing to share. It was very nice of pros from other units to contribute their time. This was one of those rare moments I learned about in an economics class long ago, the mutual coincidence of desire. I’ve forgotten the rest of that class, but the phrase has persisted.

Marshall Yancey & Gary Kao were first overall, with first in the B and C stratifications going to Louis Martin & Karen Kulander. Other section tops went to Steve Castellino & Norma Hamm and Missy Coy & Fia Bosklopper.

At the Diablo Valley sectional, Claire & Thomas Feury had a stratification top. In the bracketed Swiss, Peter Friedland’s team was first in their bracket, while the team of  Joseph Chui, Hiram Shen, Leon Lee & Jerry Lundquist tied for first in their bracket.

At the Marin sectional, Tania Reyes had a section top. My Swiss team set a record of a different sort, finding ways to lose all 7 matches. What’s the saying? Those that can’t do, write about those that can?

Congratulations to our newest Masters: Rosemary Heath, Betty Rosa (Junior); Williams Smith (Club); Elenalani Lam, Robert Martin, Jia Wang, Patricia Yelvington (Sectional); Hubert Roberts, David Sisson (Regional); Fung Bao, Rita Tingley (Silver).
