It’s June (at least it will be when you read this. Rain has poured done while I’m writing this.). Don’t worry. You haven’t missed an announcement about our annual member appreciation dinner and game yet. This year the game will be a month later than usual, on Sunday, July 10, because there are local events every weekend of June. We’re having the dinner at a new location as well, the Sonoma Chicken Coop in Campbell. I’ll have more information next month. (Don’t check it out ahead of time or one of my favorite restaurants will become even more crowded.)

I hope you’ve voted in our election for unit board members. We have about a dozen candidates for seven positions. It’s nice to have that level of interest. Maybe it’s the pizza provided at the monthly meetings.

If you’re ready to learn some new bidding conventions or improve your understanding of the conventions you’re already using, Lynn Yokel will be offering a class on Bidding Conventions on Wednesday mornings at the San Jose Bridge Club starting in mid-June. For more information, contact Lynn at lynnyokel@comcast.net or (408) 374-4669.

15 tables of players turned out for a unit game honoring Jim Hayashi, new Emerald Life Master and long club director. If you didn’t make it, you missed some tasty treats and wine. First overall were Mindy Foos & Michael Fleisher. First in the remaining strat were Peggy Sprague & Joe Poppo.

In the Marin sectional, Stacie Bowman had a stratification top. At the Diablo Valley sectional, strat tops went to Will Watson, James Long, Harvey Lindauer & Louis Martin, Henri Fahri & Kit Humphrey, and Boyer Chu. In the Swiss event, winning their brackets were the teams of Tania Moalem, Panette Talia, Ron Siegrist & Ray Yuenger; and Janet Adamiak, Raja Smadi, Cassandra Leung & Fung Bao. A team with Tania and Ray won its bracket in the Sacramento sectional.  (It was worth the trip, especially considering the catered lunch.)

You can sometimes teach an old dog a new trick. This column will be acknowledging new Life Masters, thusly: Congratulations to new Life Master Candy Wentworth and to Platinum Life Master and honorary unit member Don Nemiro.

As for those I’ve missed in the past, my apologies. What can I say? “The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.”  So “Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today.”  (Where else can you go from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam to the Grassroots?)
