It’s Thursday evening.  Your fingers itch for the feel of cards.  You wish could play at the San Jose Bridge club.  Your wish has come true.  On June 15, Lynn Yokel will turn on the lights and start a new stratified open game at 7:30 p.m. with a little help from her friends, Neal Webb and me.  If you like our Tuesday night game, it should be more of the same.  If you don’t like it, it should be completely different.  If you’ve missed having another opportunity to play during the week, come out, support the new game, and keep the club open.

On the same day, Lynn will also be moving her newcomers game to Thursday night from Sunday.  Players with less than 20 masterpoints are welcome.  Lynn will offer a lesson for newcomers starting at 6:45 p.m.  For more information, contact her at (408)-374-4669 or lyokel@sprynet.com.

Also coming in June will be a free unit game, preceded by a free dinner for all members of Unit 507.  Newly elected members of the unit board will be announced at the dinner.  It’s an evening to recognize all members.  Space is limited, so sign up at the club or contact Lynn or me.

How sharp of you to notice I didn’t mention a date for the unit dinner.  It’s tentatively June 18, but subject to change.  This column has listed other dates that proved wrong due to scheduling conflicts that appeared after my deadline.

April was a slow month for local tournaments.  Diablo Valley had its black and white sectional, experimenting with three pairs sessions in one day.  Strat tops were earned by Jack Verson & Marshall Yancey, Steve Conaway (got the spelling right this time), Anne Boboricken & Marolyn Imaoka-Yancey, William Watson, Gary & Jan Soules, Charley & Andrea James.  First in their respective Swiss teams brackets were Ed & Barbara Barlow’s team, Tony Staw’s team, and the team of Chin & Melody Chao and David Chang.  Hmmm.  Looks like marriage has forged some strong bridge partnerships.  Maybe you should propose to your favorite partner.

Instead of local tournaments, we had STAC week.  I don’t have official results yet, but we should see the following scores in the overalls in open games:  in the As, 65.48% Rose Johnson-Meltzer & Diane Shannon, 64.42 % Patricia Hannah & Ivan Rose, 62.33% Jean Power & Josephine Cooley; in the Bs, 73.81% Lynn Yokel & Annette Powers, 62.34% Greg McLaughlin & Tony Staw, 62.18% Timothy White & Latricia McConnell; in the Cs, 59.82% Santo Barreca & Shih-Ming Shih, 59.52% Mike Braun & Joan Simpson, 57.35% Michael Abrams & June McCullough.  And in the limited games 69.05% Irv Wentzien & Marion Wentzien, 65% Sherry Waki & Eileen Edwards.

STAC week brought a nice turnout at the club including two special games on Thursday and Friday nights.  Thursday night was the local directorial debut of Will Watson.  Always nice to have new directors available.
