After what has seemed to be a local tournament every weekend, the upcoming summer schedule has longer breaks between tournaments. This will be a shorter column, with fewer results to report.

A number of local players traveled to the Monterey sectional and enjoyed their new clubhouse at Fort Ord. I hear that one of their local players donated a large amount to refurbish a former military building, which the Monterey club is able to rent for $1 a year. Filled with this spirit of giving, the members of the Monterey unit contributed many nice snacks, including free root beer floats on Saturday night.

Earning strat tops in pair games at the Monterey sectional were Sherry Waki, Gary & Jan Soules, Neal Webb & Ray Yuenger, Bernard & Mildred Brown, Phyllis Vierra & Alex Tampilang, and David Chang & Chee Tung. 7 The following teams were first in their strats:  a team including Leila Sink & will Watson, a team with Melody & Chin Chao, and another consisting of Joyce & Bill Keckler and George Pledger & Mindy Foos.

Gary & Jan Soules also earned a strat top at the Vallejo sectional, as did Lynn Yokel and Fang Wu & TC Yang. Gary Porter’s Swiss team topped their strat.

One of my favorites regionals has come and gone, the Sacramento regional. A number of local players distinguished themselves wth strat tops. Bob Elliott continued his winning ways in 299er games. 299ers strat tops also went to Joy Baker & Jane Casciano and Michael Ravera & Pam Woods.

Strat tops in two-session pair games went to Lynn Yokel, Constance Dunckelmann, and Ernest English. A team including Neal Webb & Ray Yuenger won a compact knockout. Rose Meltzer’s championship team won the premier event, the two-day open Swiss.  A number of teams involving local players were in the hunt, providing further evidence of what a strong unit we have. Other regional results should appear elsewhere in this paper.

It’s heartening to have Bill Travers come back from health problems to continue directing. His Monday morning game is the most popular at the club. Let’s hope his doctor approves of his efforts to avoid what Bill calls “calcification of the posterior.”

If you want to play Swiss teams at the club, you’ll have an opportunity in July. Look for notices to be posted at the club.
