Welcome to Y2K, formerly known as the year 2000.  If you’re reading this, chances are the world has not ground to a halt due to some short-sighted computer programming.  And you haven’t collapsed due to seasonal stress and overindulgence.  Pat yourself on the back and get ready for a new year, with my wishes for happiness to all.

In the immediate future is a unit game on Thursday evening, January 13.  Don’t bring a partner, as it’s going to be an individual game, with constantly changing partners.

I’ve got good news and bad news.  The good news is that our unit will be well-represented at the nationals in Cincinnati.  T. C. Yang and Fang Wu won the District 21 Flight B NAOP event.  Sathya Bettadapura and his partner were second.  Annette Powers and her partner won the Flight C event.  Yay!  (Sorry, Julie Burnet, my policy is to only mention unit members in this column.)

The bad news is Rita and Jeanne have closed their Thursday night game due to lack of participation.  I know they tried hard to find a popular format.  We owe them thanks.

Speaking of nationals, in Boston Rose Johnson-Meltzer and Peter Weichsel enjoyed knockout success, as did Bin Dai.  Dai’s Swiss team was also first in their flight.  Li-Chung Chen was 3rd in the 99er pairs.

Without a local regional in November, I have a shorter honor roll, though there were many local sectionals.  In the Berkeley sectional Sathya Bettadapura had a section top in the afternoon.  Bin Dai was first overall Saturday evening with a 71.02 % game.

In the Marin sectional Gary and Jan Soules were first in their section and second overall in the Saturday afternoon game.  (I deserve some credit for overbidding to 4 hearts against them.)

In the Napa sectional, Frank Lowenthal was first in the Saturday afternoon pairs.  (Live and learn.  Frank is among the unit members I’ve neglected reporting on.)  Scott Gulland’s Swiss team was first in their flight.

In the Oakland sectional, section and flight tops were earned by T. C. Yang, Ray Yuenger, and Gary Porter in pairs events.

Making New Year’s resolutions?  I’ve got a few.  I’ll try to take a moment to acknowledge my opponents when I sit down at the bridge table.  Without them we’d have all the pairs sitting the same direction.  And we’d have no bridge game.

I’m going to spell Dave Pankratz’s last name right at least this once.  I’m going to study our new membership roster in an effort to acknowledge all our successful members.

Contents of this column are not warranted against oversights or human error induced by too many late bridge nights.  I know, spoken like a lawyer.  Corrections, comments, and news are welcome at (408)379-7717 and rayyuenger@earthlink.net.
