Our next unit game is on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m. It’s a new format that should be a lot of fun, knockout-style matchpoint pairs. You and your partner are seated against a pair with an equivalent number of masterpoints and you play them all night long. All tables play the same boards. Your results are compared against all other pairs sitting in the same direction. Come out and give it a try. If you’re at the Dallas nationals that day, we’ll miss you.

Lynn Yokel will be offering Audrey Grant’s eight-week course on Defense starting April 7th on Friday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30. To sign up or for more information, contact her at LynnYokel@comcast.net or (408)374-4669.

At the San Francisco sectional, Panette Talia, Steve Chen, Neil Robinson & Ravi Thomas earned stratification tops in pair games. Steve’s team also won the A/X Swiss. With Neil & Ravi, Kathy Maxfield’s team got a strat top, as did the team including Lynn Shannon & Bruce Scott.

Starting off the President’s Day regional, strat tops in the charity pairs went to Rita Tingley, Judi Carollo, Jennifer Gu, and Marc Epstein. First in the premier IMP pairs game went to Will Watson & Leila Sink. Earning strat tops in other two-session pair games were: Fung Bao, Li-Chung Chen, Boyer Chu, Frank Lowenthal, Ron Siegrist & Lynn Yokel, Zag Kadah & Bassam Baroudi, Stephen Tu, and Sigmund Malek. Prevailing in the limited games were: Mary Stewart, Ron Baron, Julie Joyce, Mike Carney & Michael O’Connor, Wendy Fotland & Allan Malloy, Patricia Yelvington & Jan Kiernan, Robert & Linda Caren, Peggy Chen, Dee Peterson & Delores Dunlap.

Winning in knockout matches were Rose Meltzer, Henri Farhi & Kit Humphrey, Melinda Foos & Michael Fleisher, Chee Tung, Steve Chen, Stacie Bowman, and Matt Moore.

The top Swiss teams included Ivy Chueh, Paul Lee, Cassandra Leung & Samuel Shat; Lynn Yokel & Gigi Spinazze; Mary Harvel, Randolf Rice, Richard Markell & Eileen Kotecki; Paul Nelson, Read Kitson, Josephine Cooley & Pat Hannah, and Fung Bao. Other unit members distinguished themselves in single-session games. Are we lucky to have two regionals in our backyard?

My deadline is one day too early for me to receive the results of the B. E. R. sectional, so stay tuned.
