It’s time to acknowledge our unit’s winners for 2002 in the mini-McKenney (total masterpoints) and Ace of Clubs (club masterpoints) races. In both categories Eric Yang was the Rookie of the Year, Faye Parsons was Gold Life Master, and Peter Weichsel was Grand Life Master. The rest of the Masters I’ll list by category, with mini-McKenney first: Fung Bao and Peter Kao (Junior); Mich Ravera and Gerald Mitchell (Club); Joan Rouse and Mike Sullivan (Sectional); Fang Wu and Leon Lee (Regional); Steve Chen and Richard Jacobs (NABC); Stephen Tu and George Pledger (Life); Shih-Ming Shih and David Gambelin (Bronze); Kou-Ping Cheng and Ted Richmond (Silver); Rose Meltzer and Frances Dickman (Diamond).

In the national mini-McKenney races, Eric Yang and Shih-Ming Shih were both 8th, Steve Chen was 6th, Stephen Tu was 15th, Rose Meltzer was 14th. Eric was also 10th in the Ace of Clubs. This is what I call a lot of local and young talent.

If this newspaper happens to arrive before Sunday, March 30, you can come to our club at 12:30 p.m. to meet and play against these winners in a unit game. Speaking of unit games, the board has been unable to find dates in the next couple of months that don’t conflict with a holiday or local tournament. But we’ll keep trying.

I have results to report from the President’s Day regional, which should also appear elsewhere in this paper. The results can also be found at http://www.acbl.org/tournaments/results/2003/february/0302001.htm. Stratification tops the first night went to Hiram Shen & Chung-Ho Fan and Phillis Reinhardt & Jane Casciano. In two-session pair games, strat tops were earned by Gigi Spinnaze, Boyer Chu & Ginn Hua, David Chang, and Ruthann Critchfield. Glenn Quinn won the IMP pairs. Peter Sun & Qing Yang won open pairs. On winning knockout teams were Rose Meltzer, Celso & Consorcia Ravelo, Robert & Linda Caren, Joan & Gerry Piaget, Ray & Maxine Lubow, Ruth Sporer & Gigi Spinazze, Maureen Ellenberg, Irene & William Price, Richard Jacobs, Hiram Shen, Malcolm Stewart and Eric Yang.

Prevailing in their Swiss team strats were William Riester, Jr., Ted Richmond & Diane Shannon; David Chang, Boyer Chu & Bertrand Hsu; K-P Cheng & Jeffrey Hu; Michael Fleisher, Gigi Spinazze & Shih-Ming Shih; ChingLing Tseng; the Lubows, Ruth Sporer & Maureen Ellenberg; Michael Migdol, Mansoor Gowani, Michael Fleisher & Larry Wagner. Too many members did well in single-session games to list here.

At the El Cerrito sectional, Ray Yuenger had a strat top. A Swiss team with Steve Chen & Lynn Yokel finished one victory point out of first place.
