From The President

Dan Turkus

Our sectional was a success (meaning we made a little money), although attendance was down 30 tables from last year. Not bad considering the Forum started out with the wrong dates, then the Bulletin had Phyllis Vierra’s phone incorrectly printed and omitted us from the Tournament Trail in the latest edition.

You have all seen the sign-up sheets for the Mentor Program on the wall, and we need some Mentors for the abundance of Mentorees. So if you are a Life Master or above, and would like to mentor a newer player only once a month (or more if you’re dedicated, or happen to like your mentoree), please sign up!

Mark your calendars!! Coming to the San Jose Bridge Center on Sunday, November 5, 2000 . . . The Rose Bowl . . . .A unit game honoring Rose Meltzer-Johnson for helping her team bring the Spingold Trophy to our Unit!! Yea Rose!!! There will be food and great bridge! Look for the sign-up sheet, as this game is sure to fill both rooms and all of our tables.

The next unit game will be our annual potluck Holiday/Chanukah/Christmas/Kwanza Party which we have scheduled for Sunday, December 10 . . . during STAC week, so you can win silver points while partying!

To all experienced players, and you newer players listen up . . . if you are going to make a claim, state your line of play, and expose your hand. Some of our newer players may not see your claim as fast as a more seasoned player, and we all may want to check and see if you may have reneged during the play. If you simply say, "I’ve got the rest," I’ll bet I can find a line of play where you won’t get the rest.

And you newer players, don’t let the seasoned players intimidate you. If you feel something is wrong, and I mean anything (from no pencils on the table, too hot in the room, to anything that seems unusual in the play, in a claim, a bid out of turn, failure to alert, or other bidding irregularities) it is not a horrible thing to call the director! In fact to quote Gary Porter, "I like director calls, they keep me awake and keep me from getting bored." He also stated, "and that is why we pay all that money to play." I personally probably drive some of the directors nuts with some of my calls, but that’s why they are there . . . to give us protection and to make sure we get a satisfactory explanation and ruling. Don’t wait until the hand is over, call the director immediately, because when you mention the irregularity after the hand is played, it’s usually too late. The directors are our friends and act as that neutral third party (like a marriage counselor, referee in a sporting contest, or the judge), and, have you noticed, when they arrive at the table, they usually ask, "How may I help?"

Their rulings come right out of the rule book you see some of them carrying to the table, or consulting when something really unusual happens. With this said, come on out to the "tougher" games, and call the directors more often. They don’t bite!!

See you at the tables.
