From the President by Dan Turkus

Well, STAC week is over. I hope you all got enough silver points. Our two extra games: Saturday night, Mother’s Day eve, had 10 full tables; and Sunday, Mother’s Day, had 8 full tables. Thanks to all of you who attended these two extra games.

And the nominees are???? It’s election time again, please look for a ballot on the computer desk top, and fill it in, and deposit it in the Gold Box. The new board members will be announced at our Unit Game/Party/free dinner & bridge on June 10th, aka the Annual Membership Appreciation Game, totally free to members of Unit 507! And look for the sign up sheet for this Unit party and sign up early, so if we need the big room we can book it, and also we need to tell the restaurant or caterer how many people to expect. So if you’re reading this, and plan to attend, and are not a member of Unit 507, perhaps it is time to tell someone on the Board (listed elsewhere in this publication) of your desire to transfer into one of the stronger Units in the ACBL, and qualify for a great free dinner and bridge game!

Have you noticed all the books in our book exchange? Thank you Helen Mitchell for bringing down five full, heavy boxes of reading materials. Feel free to take a book and read it, maybe several. After all this publication
shouldn’t take too much of your time.

Thanks to all of you who submitted a charity of your choice. Everything is being submitted to the ACBL, and hopefully all the organizations will be
getting checks . . . . your ACBL membership dues coming back to the community!

Did you notice in the last issue of "The Di-Rek’or" Ray asked for a
little assistance composing this news letter. . . . I suspect he is running out
of clipart. (Nope, just time. — Ed.) Give Ray a call if you can help or have a bridge-related article.

Have you seen anything going on at the clubs that you think needs
changing? Is there anything that perhaps needs to be implemented, tried, or eliminated (other than your partner) from our bridge games? If so, our next Board meeting is June 6, at 5:30 P.M. Come on by, stand up and be heard.

See you at the tables.

Quit while you’re ahead by Joyce Davis

(contributed by Glenda Ciochon)

I oft recall that when we wed,
to help increase my knowledge,
my husband said, "I’ll teach you bridge,
a game I played in college."
He dealt the cards and said, "one heart."
Opponent passed, then I did,
‘Cause all I had was just one heart,
and that’s no good, so why bid?
Opponent passed, then hubby shrugged
and said, "Now you’re the dummy."
I answered, "Look, don’t call me names.
I still can play gin rummy."
Opponent led, I showed my hand
and quickly got the feeling
that hubby must be very mad.
I saw him hit the ceiling.
"How could you pass with eighteen points,
six spades, one heart, three aces?
We’ve missed a slam." "So what?" I cried,
"You needn’t make such faces."
I dried my tears and soon resolved
that I would ease these tensions
by taking lessons twice a week
in systems and conventions.
My groom was thrilled to learn my plan.
He thought it fine and dandy
until he heard me arguing
for Astro versus Landy.
I cited Schenken, quoted Roth
discussed responsive doubles.
And the Stayman variations
only multiplied our troubles.
"One no trump, dear," my husband called.
"Four hearts!" (You know that’s Texas.)
But he said, "pass," and thus began
the battle of the sexes.
Now I’m no dummy anymore,
but master points I’ll wager,
that hubby rues the day I learned,
a minor from a major.
