From the President  by Dan Turkus

I asked in previous articles what it would take to get you all out to a Unit game. I think we finally found the answer, and it’s not Italian food, but a free seven-course meal followed by free bridge. Well, you all surprised me at this last Unit game with 33 tables, of which 7 tables were 0-20 players. What a great showing! And I thought 21 tables at the Holiday party in December was big.

If you missed the Unit dinner, you missed a great snack (I’d call it a feast — Ed.) at Fung Lum restaurant. We started with three appetizers, followed by hot and sour soup, and then seven more courses. I noticed leftovers at every table! I’m glad everyone had a good time.

The winners will be announced in our next issue, as I understand the results are riding around with Gary Porter, who was kind enough to direct for us. (They are now posted at the club. Ed.) Great job, Gary, and next time we have a game of this size we will get you an assistant!

Thanks to all the people behind the scenes who called several restaurants and caterers getting prices, making arrangements, and especially Lynn Yokel for renting the room and pushing so hard for going out to dinner instead of having a giant barbecue. Also, thanks to Ray Yuenger, Neal Webb, Will Watson, Art Fonda, (Phyllis Vierra, Alex Tampilang, Richard and Sandee Jacobs, and Dan Turkus —Ed.) for helping to set up, and thanks to all who helped take down the tables

EasyBridge! 3 is being launched by Faye Parsons on Sunday nights. Please pick up a flyer at the club, or give Faye a call.

The elections were held, and all the incumbents were reelected. So far no one has called for a recount! Did you hear that, Al Gore?

In our next Board meeting we will be scheduling more Unit games. (Can we beat 33 tables?) If you would like to input your point of view on the type of Unit game you would like to participate in, please feel free to come to our next Board meeting or talk to one of us on the Board. The next meeting will be at 5:30 P.M., Wednesday, July 11, 2001.

See you at the table.

Conduct and Ethics

YOUR OPPONENT WON’T VANISH IF YOU LOOK AWAY by Bill Langlois, Conduct and Ethics Chairman

One of the actions proscribed by Law 74 (Conduct and Etiquette) is "looking intently at any other player during the auction and play." It’s easy to violate this admonition without realizing it, especially if someone is taking a long time to bid or play, but some players really do dislike being the object of close scrutiny. The solution is to take positive counter-action. By the way, it’s also good bridge.

During the auction, you can spend much of your time studying the bidding tableau, and maybe planning your next action. This is one of the many advantages of bid boxes. If someone is taking a long time, review the auction for yourself. You might even get a surprise, and save some grief. ("Hey, my partner’s one-spade bid was an overcall, not an opening bid.")

During the play, use another player’s huddle to review what’s transpired, and to construct the unseen hands. This is easier if you look at dummy’s cards instead of someone’s face. If it’s an opponent who’s deliberating, it’s perfectly proper to think about what the problem might be.

In two circumstances, looking intently at another player is an infraction that transcends etiquette.

Some amateur psychologists engage in the process of "staring down the opponents" to help locate the queen of trumps. This is reprehensible.

The other circumstance is best appreciated from the other side. Are you ever contemplating your bid only to realize that partner has been looking at you for several seconds? Your reaction is probably "Whoops, did I forget an agreement?" Yes you did, and partner has just illegally reminded you of it. A good idea was recently proposed in a letter to the ACBL Bulletin: never look at partner during the auction.
