Would you like
800 or so Bridge players to think about your business every time that had to
look up another Bridge player’s phone number? Would it be worth $50.00 for your
non-Bridge ad or $25.00 for something having to do with Bridge? If so, drop
your business card with a check to “ACBL Unit 507” in to the vessel at the
ACBL Unit 507 reserves the right to reject ads, but, as long as it doesn’t advertise anything blatantly illegal or offensive to more than 20% of the Bridge playing population, we want your money. The Unit promises not to supersede the directory for at least 6 months from the date of publication. Historically, the directory has been published annually.
Lots of good new this month. We took last month off due to the Regional. Many thanks go to Mich Ravera, Judy Travis, Dixie Wade, and Jeff Hack for helping me out at the Partnership and Hospitality Desk. Hopefully, everyone did well and got our share of the points. I know I saw many of our Unit Players winning most of the events.
Stu Goodgold has been elected as Vice President of District 21, and Jeff Hack is the new Charity Chairman of District 21, so submit the charity of your choice, as we now have a strong voice as to who will receive those donations given out by the ACBL!
Elections are also coming up for our Unit, so start thinking of who you would like to see on our Board. By the way, a lot of people think the Board is in charge of the Club, and that is not the case unless the event is a Unit Game. The Club owners are in charge of what goes on in the clubs. So, if you have suggestions regarding the facility itself, those should be directed to the Director who is running the game. All the Unit does is run our Sectionals and Unit Games: the Holiday Party Potluck, the Membership Dinner Party, Wine and Cheese Parties, Pro/Am games, and The Annual Ace of Clubs/ Mini-McKinney. The Unit also provides people for the Partnership and Hospitality Desk at the local Regionals. You don't have to be on the Board to help out at these functions. All the rest is handled by the Club owners (tables, chairs, coffee, tea, food, etc!)
We have several Unit Games coming up, so look for a post card giving the dates and times. The card you receive may or may not be addressed to you, but it should have an address that is correct. Even if someone else's name is on the card, you are still invited to play at the games. We sure got a lot of people's attention on the last mailer with the random names. Did that help create any new partnerships? I know a few people searched their houses looking for the addressee on the card.
Don't forget our Sectional on March 24th through the 26th. Brochures are at the club. Oh, if you didn't know, the ACBL has an emergency phone number for the Regionals and Sectionals which is 810-CARD (2273), so even with your phone shut off at the event, if you give the number to someone that might be looking for you, they will get through!
If you want extra points, mark your calendars for the Unit Game dates as follows:
Saturday April 8th 7 PM: Mini-McKinney/Ace of Clubs awards game
Sunday, May 7th at 11 AM is a Pro/AM
Saturday, May 13th at 7:00 PM is a STAC Unit Game,
Please update your information (current address and phone number) at the club, so our next Directory is correct. Also, there is still time, if you would like, to get your business card published in that directory for a mere $50.00, you will be seen a countless number of times as everyone looks for new partners, or checks to see how many points everyone else has. Very, very cheap advertising, and you would be helping out a good cause. If you are Bridge related, the ad only costs $25.00. Hurry!
Well, that's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.

I’ve heard it said that Necessity is the mother of Invention and that Desperate Times was her father.
After a month off for the Santa Clara Regional, we have such a large number of game results that we created an 8-page edition this time. We should be back to our now standard 6 pages next month.
Derek Fiero brought it to my attention that a lot of people were unaware that ACBL alert procedures stated it wasn’t enough to simply say “Alert!” but that it was required that the opponents actually hear it. Failure to make certain that opponents have been notified properly that a bid was alerted is, as far as the rules are concerned, the same as failing to alert at all. Since many people who grew up listening to Heavy Metal music at too loud of a volume are now playing Bridge, this becomes especially important. There is something that is rather easy to do to protect yourself from the fact that your opponents may not have heard the alert (and later claim that you failed to give one).
Many people know that you are required to wave the alert
card or tap the “Alert!“ strip when your partner makes an alertable bid. Many
people don’t know that you are also required to give some visual indication
when you make an announcement. In fact, when I first started playing Bridge in
the club in
Since the last edition, I’ve passed the club director test and am now in search of a time and place to run a game. Subject to approval by the club owners, finding a Saturday Evening that isn’t taken up by a Unit game or Sectional, making some promotional literature and finding enough people who want to play IMP pairs or teams (and possibly drink wine [I got a lot of requests for that]) on Saturday Evenings, a game should happen starting sometime mid to late April. Look for promotional literature as the time gets closer

All games are held at
the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68,
inside the Campbell Community Center except those identified as “at Oakwood”. The
Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments,
Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local
tournaments.
