Would you like 800 or so Bridge players to think about your business every time that they wanted to call someone to play Bridge with them? Would it be worth $50.00 for your non-Bridge ad or $25.00 for something having to do with Bridge? If so, drop your business card with a check to “ACBL Unit 507” in to the vessel at the San Jose Bridge Center or find Mich Ravera or other participating Board member.

Happy New Year! Hope you all did well at the Monterey Clam Bake Regional. If not, we have the President's Day Regional in Santa Clara, and we have been asked to host the Partnership and Hospitality Tables. Yes, you can earn free plays by serving. It's also a great way to meet the hoards of lost or partnerless people. Give me a call, and I'll get you a free play!

We are going to make a new Directory, and you may advertise your business for a $50 fee or if Bridge related only $25. It's a write off, so we hope to hear from lots of you. Also, we will be posting the current list, so you can make sure your phone number, street address, and E-Mail address are all correct.

February 4th, at 7PM we are having a Unit wine and cheese party game. That means extra points for the winners! Then in March we are having the Mini McKinney/Ace of Clubs award game, followed by our Sectional which is March 24, 25 and 26th this year.

Congratulations to all you players that have achieved a higher ACBL ranking including Tania Moalem, who just cleared 2500 master points, now one of the elite Gold Life Masters, Qing Yang who hit Silver Life Master, Bronze Life Master Malcolm Stewart, Regional Master Jennifer Gu, Club Masters Mark Epstein and Eileen Kotecki, and Junior Master Vincent McLoughlin.

Judy Clark will be starting Beginner Lessons on late Saturday afternoons at the San Jose Bridge Center. The first lesson is scheduled for Saturday February 11 and to run from 5:00-7:00 PM. Check around the club for flyers or contact Judy Clark at bmcojudy@earthlink.net or 408-296-4067 for other information.

It is ten minutes before game time at a tournament and you’re entering a door to the playing area. You suddenly meet a friend you haven’t seen for a while. It’s natural to strike up a conversation, right then and there. The “right then” is fine, the “right there” isn’t. Others might want to use the doorway too. Move your conversation either into the playing room or back out into the lobby. Most of us would of course do this if we thought of it. Perhaps this note will come to mind next time it happens.

This also applies at the San Jose Bridge Center, where access between the two rooms isn’t the best. We have to live with this because the passageway can’t be made wider. The partition is load bearing. Let’s make the best of it by keeping the aisle as clear as feasible.

In 2005 we had two articles on the problem with declarer saying "Play anything" It’s happened at least twice more against me and both times it didn't make a difference and I knew that, but how hard is it to call a card.? I've been observing some of the calls. For a low card, I've seen the actual card called or just the suit plus low, bottom, small, and play. For high I've seen the actual card called, high and cover. So why not pick at least one of these instead of "play any"? Let's try in 2006 never to say "play anything"!

Still searching for the perfect present?

Give the gift of Bridge!

Lynn Yokel will be teaching Beginning Bridge lessons at the Saratoga Community Center and the Jewish Community Center of Los Gatos Starting in January 2006 For more information, contact Lynn at (408) 374-4669 or lynnyokel@comcast.net

I’ve often heard it said that when something must be done, come hell or high water, you should be certain that plenty of both are on order.

I had the great fortune to attend the Reno Regional, leave it when I had planned, and not to die there, the Hell and high water notwithstanding. The same can not be said for everyone, or so I’m told.

I was pleased to see Bill Langlois at the Board meeting last Wednesday and to receive an article from him and to forever put to rest any rumors of his demise at the Reno tournament.

I want to thank Jeff Hack for his article also.

Tania Moalem brought to my attention that she knew that she had made Gold Life Master about two months ago, but it hadn’t yet been published in these pages. I explained to her that a time lag of approximately six weeks elapses between the time someone actually earns a promotion and the time that it gets published. This has to do with the reporting cycle of masterpoints, the ACBL report to the Unit, and the time for the publication of this newsletter.

Jewel Schimke asked me to put somewhere in these pages what the requirements were for Life Master. 50 Black (if you joined after 1999), 50 Red or Gold, 25 Gold, 50 Silver, a maximum of 150 earned on line.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, inside the Campbell Community Center except those identified as “at Oakwood”. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave, San Jose. All games allow methods and systems permitted by the ACBL General Convention Chart. Those games identified as “MidChart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by those charts with proper disclosure. Check club postings, visit our web site at http://www.SJBridge.org or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Unit games, and of the 499er Potluck.

Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
