 Prez Sez           by Dan Turkus

It seems like every year the same things reoccur, but in different forms and colors. We have lots of jackets and sweaters that have been hanging on the hooks most of the summer (Yup, they are not the same ones that were left last year, but there are 4 or 5 of them, and all this time I thought Bridge Players had such good memories). I know one of the owners likes Merlot and Cabernet, and shops at 'Beverages and More.' Also, the same day you bought an item at Home Depot. sound familiar? Well, your green jacket is still there, and if you claim it soon (before the end of the month), you won't have to go to the store and buy another one! Or should we keep them for all the cold people in the book exchange room?

Talking about books, we have lots of new titles if you haven't noticed. Take a book to a friend, or....

We had our NAP play off on Sunday, October 30th, and the results are posted at the Club and at www.sjbridge.org. Thanks to our director John Prior, who I think was slightly overwhelmed by having 19 tables of people, all wanting something at the same time. I have never heard so many Director calls before! I guess it was because of the Halloween weekend, and all the ghouls from all over the Bay Area came down to the last chance to "Q" for the District finals.

Mark your calendars for STaC week in December. We will be having an extra Unit game so you people needing SILVER points can accumulate more, or for all of us who want higher rewards for doing well!

December 18 is going to be our Holiday party, another time for extra points, also, a great time to eat great treats fixed by some of our culinary artists! This happens to be one of my favorite games, because I'm on a "See Food Diet", I see it, I eat it, and what better time to try out this diet, than our Holiday Party.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, I will have all the new Life Master's names engraved and mounted on our new Life Master Board. The lady at the trophy shop was a bit surprised, and slightly overwhelmed, at the number of plaques to be engraved. She said, "You need it when?" Thanks to all of you patient people, your name will soon be up on the wall.

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.

Friday Nights             by Carole Dietz

Our Pro-Am was once again very successful with 17 tables of enthusiastic players enjoying the mental challenge. We thank everyone who attended and look forward to next year's game.

Friday, December 9th will be a STaC game with extra points (silver) awarded to the winners. As you know, all Friday night games in District 21 will be playing the same hands so it will be a feather in your cap if you can come in the overalls that evening.

We will be having a Christmas Party on Friday, December 16th. Please plan on attending and help us celebrate the holiday season. We truly appreciate your support this year.

The Friday night game is really coming along.

A Sad Good-bye to Sally McLane
by Al Becker and Jewel Schimke

We are sorry to lose Sally McLane, who died on November 6 after a 4-month bout with cancer. Sally was a regular at our club who in the 1980s played with Sally Nakashima on Friday monings and more recently on Monday mornings for more than 10 years with Barbara Marleau, and also on Fridays with Jewel Schimke for the past 31/2 years.

We’ll miss Sally’s sweet, gentle disposition at the table as well as her ability to play well and quickly. She took suggestions as graciously as she did everything else. She was, in other words, an ideal partner. In her last game on July 8, she finished in first place.

Sally often spoke of her family. She left two children and three grandchildren, most of whom live in California. Her daughter is a circuit court judge and her son is a criminal attorney. When her grandson was 10, she play Bridge on the internet with him.

She left us much too soon.

John Kenneth Galbraith said, “If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.”  In addition to a rough description of my preempting style, this applies equally well to almost anything else in Bridge (and to most things in life).

I’ve commented before in this space how great tournaments don’t just happen. Well, sometimes they don’t. Sunday October 30, unbeknownst to me and the other board members, was designated by some rather nasty people as “Whine and Pick on a New Director until he Bleeds” day. If the board had been aware of this, we would have provided the director with a Stun Gun for subduing unruly contestants and given broadest possible authority for its use. (We’re still checking with legal counsel and with Memphis on this one.) I saw an instance of the need and actual deployment of such a device at a Bridge tournament a few days earlier in Las Vegas, but Nevada’s law is considerably different from California’s on this. Caught in the middle of all of this foolishness was John Prior. People behaved so poorly and were just in general so nasty that John refused payment for his services and resigned from the Board and as Unit Treasurer and suspended his Saturday Evening game. I hope to Hell that all of you nasty people are satisfied! The board voted unanimously not to accept his resignation, but who could really blame John, if he were to simply avoid Bridge clubs for the rest of his life.

On a related note, I have some good news for these people, in a little known joint proclamation by the Governor and President, the 38 seconds beginning at 10:16:19 AM Pacific Time on Wednesday November 28, have been officially designated “Crybaby Month”. In an era of limited government, they couldn’t afford a full 30 days of whining, so please make your displeasure about anyone and anything known to someone during those precious 38 seconds.

After that, can we get on with having some fun please?

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, inside the Campbell Community Center except those identified as “at Oakwood”. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave, San Jose. All games allow methods and systems permitted by the ACBL General Convention Chart. Those games identified as “MidChart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by those charts with proper disclosure. Check club postings, visit our web site at http://www.SJBridge.org or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Unit games, and of the 499er Potluck.

Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
