Here's a great way we all can promote Bridge in our area and not take any time out of your day, unless we are all using the same doctors and dentists. Instead of disposing of those old Bridge Bulletins, why not take them to waiting rooms in medical or other offices? This is a great way to spread the word about bridge and the ACBL. Thanks to Gordon Waters of Brockville ON for the suggestion. You might want to remove the page that has your name and point totals before leaving the magazine. Adding a phone number of a bridge club or bridge teacher on the cover might be a great idea.

We have an abundance of coats and sweaters left over from last winter. They are all piled in the 2 center hooks at the club. Please take them home before winter comes again. One of you went to Home Depot, and the bought a bottle of Merlot and a bottle of Cabernet. You left the receipt in the jacket, but paid cash or I would have used your last 4 credit card numbers.

Our book exchange is also well stocked currently. Please feel free to take a few books home with you!

Our Sectional is coming up September 23-25. The Friday afternoon game will start at 2:00 PM. We are also going to offer a NEW event, a FAST PAIRS game on Sunday for those who prefer pairs to Swiss teams. Please feel free to arrive a little early and help us set up the tables. Also, Tania would appreciate any food, cookies, cakes, sandwiches, etc. to help feed the hungry masses.

Congratulations go to all of you that cleaned up at the All Western Regional. So many of you placed in the Overalls that I don't have enough space to publish all of your names. One big win was Bruce Lutrell, Tania Moalem, K.P. Cheng and Dana Brown’s knock out of Mark Itabachi and Fred Hamilton's team. Apparently, Hamilton didn't work for Fred (the convention's inventor). Or did our players use it effectively against them?

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables

2nd Annual Friday Night Pro-Am Game, October 28

Our first ProAm game, last October, was hugely successful. We had 18 tables and were not really prepared for such a wonderful turnout. However, feedback indicated that everyone (both Pros and Ams) enjoyed their learning experience.

This year, we will be prepared!! We will hold the event on Friday night, October 28th. Please save the date! The conditions of the tournament are that all Ams must have fewer than 300 masterpoints. The Pro's should be life masters (not a set-in-stone requirement). The game will begin at 7:00 at the bridge center. After the game, if you wish to stay, we will have distinguished guests, Ed Barlow and Don Nemiro, instructing on all aspects of the evening's hands

Please mark your calendars and help us make this annual game a premier event for our unit. George and I thank you in advance for your support.

In Disney’s production of Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” a most amusing scene unfolds where an army of elephants all of whom are in single rank, are requested by their commander to volunteer for a presumably dangerous assignment by taking a step forward. Each of the elephants in rank takes a giant step backwards while the commander isn’t looking and (to the commander at least) it seems that they have all volunteered and the Commander congratulates the entire rank for its bravery and initiative.

This scene is repeated so frequently in life that I should recognize those people who have chosen either not to take a step backwards or actually to have volunteered to help out in various instances recently.

Once such person is Bill Langlois. He, while attending a recent Board meeting and just offering a routine report on Conduct and Ethics, agreed to speak at our Sectional. Everyone should come to hear him speak whether the topic of “Playing up” is of particular interest to them or not. His talks always give food for thought, pass on good information, and usually leave the listener saying “Yeah, that happened to me just the other day!”

I also wish to thank all of the teachers who presented the beginners lessons at the recent tournament. Carol Woodward, John Prior, Jeff Hack, and Barbara Weber all either volunteered or failed to take a large enough step backwards and we ended up with a great set of teachers to present the lessons. As I have said before in other contexts, I won’t claim that it couldn’t have been done with out them, but can honestly say that it wouldn’t have been done without them. Jim Cohen, the coordinator has said the same thing.

It doesn’t really fit in with the theme, but what does it take to earn 44 gold points in a Regional? I don’t have the answer for that. You’ll have to ask Judy Travis, winner of two knockouts!

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, inside the Campbell Community Center except those identified as “in Sunnyvale”, “at Belmont Village”, and “at Oakwood. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave, San Jose. All games allow methods and systems permitted by the ACBL General Convention Chart. Those games identified as “MidChart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by those charts with proper disclosure. Check club postings, visit our web site at http://www.SJBridge.org or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Unit games, and of the 499er Potluck.

Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
