Don’t Be
Afraid of Open Events
Saturday night is a Unit game honoring Don Nemiro, who has
attained the 10,000 point level. It is his wish that other players who have hit
milestones in Bridge also be recognized. Every now and than I hit a milestone
in Bridge, and those would be when partner understands my bids or doesn't yell
at me, or I remember to alert one of partner’s bids!
Do you like free plays? Would you like one or two or
three at our upcoming Regional? We need people to sit on or behind the
Partnership and Hospitality tables. We need 3 people two times a day, before
the afternoon and evening sessions. We also need one person before the Tuesday
evening session. So, if you want to help out the Unit and play some free bridge,
give me a call and sign up or the days of your choice. Hurry, as the slots will
fill quickly! This is also a great way to meet other players. I sat on the
partnership desk one day long ago when I didn't have a game scheduled and, at
the last minute, a lady came running up. She needed a partner for the game
starting in 5 minutes, and since no one else was available, I played with her
and we were third overall in the event. Don, does that qualify as a milestone?
Start picking your partners for our fall Sectional, which
occurs at the end of September. Look for brochures at the club soon.
That's it for this month, so I'll see you at the tables.
Players
with less than 20 master points will play free in the Thursday Morning game
during the month of September. A Prize will be awarded to the top under 20
pair. Game time is

Annual Friday Night Pro-Am Game, October 28
Our
first ProAm game, last October, was hugely successful. We had 18 tables
and were not really prepared for such a wonderful turnout. However, feedback
indicated that everyone (both Pros and Ams) enjoyed their learning experience.
This
year, we will be prepared!! We will hold the event on Friday night, October
28th. Please save the date! The conditions of the
tournament are that all Ams must have fewer than 300 masterpoints. The Pro's
should be life masters (not a set-in-stone requirement). The game will begin at
Please
mark your calendars and help us make this annual game a premier event
for our unit. George and I thank you in advance for your support.

A book published in the early 1980s entitled “The Official Rules” indicated, among other gems of wisdom in its pages, that the shortest measurable instant of time is that between the accumulation of funds for a rainy day and the onset of the rain.
It is with this thought in mind that I welcome
The only amplification that I can make to Bill’s words is that, in addition to the law book, it wouldn’t hurt to have a copy of the Convention Charts and the Alert Charts as well. I have done my best to see that these are available on the Club computer. I will also print a few copies and leave them at the club.
In Sectionals two weeks apart, I discovered in one case
that our opponents were playing an illegal convention (

Don’t Be Afraid of
Open Events
By
Some I/N players are reluctant to play in “Stratified
Open” events. Never mind that they won’t be scored against the stronger
players. They don’t even want to play against them. This is unfortunate because
“playing up” is one of the best ways to improve your game. When I was a
non-lifemaster, world champion Don Oakie taught me to count hands on defense. I
was never one of his students but, playing against him, I learned that he
couldn’t steal tricks from me if I kept count.
Also, sometimes you and your partner will have control of
the situation and give a world-class pair a bottom board. This is one of the
game’s greatest pleasures! Why give it up?
Most who dislike strats say they’re intimidated by the
better players. A valid concern, so let’s see what you can do about it.
The lesser issue: they intimidate you by superior
ability. This seldom comes up in the play: you know without being told that you
lost tricks because you made mistakes, they didn’t; no intimidation factor. The
auction is a different matter. A typical scenario: your quality opponents play 2♠,
you beat them a trick, and feel pretty good about it … until you see the recap
sheet and find that most pairs your way bid and made game. They stole the
auction from you. The answer: work on your own competitive bidding. At our next
sectional, if all goes according to plan, I’ll give a talk that deals with
this.
The more important issue: some of the better players
intimidate you by being obnoxious. The ACBL has worked hard to solve this
problem. It remains a problem, but there’s been much success.
Nevertheless, if you get intimidated only once in a
two-session event, that’s the round you remember. And it shouldn’t happen.
Don’t bail out: help us solve the problem. The best thing to do is call the director.
At games in our unit, you can also report the incident to our Unit Recorder,
Before we get into details let’s make sure your position
is solid.
First, make allowance for the fact that people are
different. Compulsive talkers, sourpusses, passive-aggressive types, etc., come
at all levels of bridge ability, and one personality flaw doesn’t make for a
bad person.
Next, be aware of your obligations as well as your
rights. Borrow a rule book and read the proprieties. Also, read Ruling the Game
each month in the ACBL Bulletin. The better players are trying to win the
event. If you fix them legitimately they should take it in stride and most do.
If you do it by improper communication, they have a valid gripe.
Let’s start with that. They can, and should, call the director
if they think improper exchange of information has taken place. However they
must do it courteously, allowing for the possibility that your action came from
of inexperience rather than larceny. If they’re obnoxious about it, ask the
director to intervene.
Next, you, and they, have the right to inquire about the
meaning of the other side’s bids. However if true, “We haven’t discussed it.” is
a full and sufficient answer. If you and your partner have lost the compass,
you don’t have to guess the answer to “What did his 3NT bid mean” even if they get pushy about it. On the
other hand, if they use a standard, but seldom occurring, sequence, they don’t
have to give you a bridge lesson in the middle of a hand. Example: an opponent,
good enough to know better, once badgered me to explain what my partner’s 2♠ bid meant in the sequence 1♣-Pass-Pass-2♠? This doesn’t come up often, but it has a standard
meaning (sound opening bid with a 6-card spade suit). When in doubt about
whether to explain a bid, or pursue an explanation, call the director.
Gloating is bad form. Again, however, remember that
quality opponents are people too. If they work hard to get a good result, allow
them an appropriate amount of afterglow. If it gets excessive, call the director.
There is absolutely no excuse for ridiculing an
opponent’s bidding or play. If this occurs, with no apology immediately
forthcoming, call the director.
So, come play the strats. Enjoy. Improve your game. When
appropriate, help us clean them up.
