The Unit Membership Appreciation Game was held July 10th starting with a great dinner for 130 hungry bridge players at the Sonoma Chicken Coop, paid for by the Unit. That means that about 600 of our members didn't want a free dinner! People have been raving about how tender the chicken was and the salad: simply fabulous and scrumptious! By the way, Sonoma Chicken Coop does a very good Eggs Benedict for you breakfast lovers.

Then, back at the Community Center, we had 211/2 tables in the open game, and 11 tables in the limited game. Sitting East-West Bruce Scott and Barbara Mash won the 199er overall with over 67%! Harry Shannon and Hugh Roberts were 1st East-West in the 49ers. Sitting North-South Judy Travis and Joel Koransky were 1st in the 199ers and Maralyn Smith and Norman Marks were 1st Overall in the 49ers. In the open game Marolyn and Marshall Yancey sitting East-West were 1st overall, just edging out North-South Kit Humphrey and Henri Farhi by 1 point in the last round! Michael Fleischer and Mindy Foos were 1st Overall in flight B sitting N-S, and 1st in B E-W went to Kathy and Rick Jasper. 1st Overall in C went to E-W to Jennifer Gu and Nongyu Li and 1st C N-S was Ravi Thomas and Neil Robinson.

Unit Board of Directors news: Erin Gove is our new Secretary replacing Marshall Yancey after 10 years of service, and John Prior is our new Treasurer replacing Neil Webb. Thanks Marshall and Neil for a job well done! All the other incumbent officers managed get reelected and hold their old positions. That means you have me as Prez again, so start reading my column. Thanks to all of you that ran in the election. It's great to have so many volunteers available.

Next month’s Unit game is going to be on Saturday August 20, and we will be celebrating Don Nemiro's 10,000 point level (for you newer players, this is not a typo, there are supposed to be 4 zeros) as well as other accomplishments of other players in the Unit.

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.

Big ♣ News

Tuesday Afternoons at the Club

Lynn Yokel and Carole Dietz have begun a new class for beginning players. At the bridge center on Tuesdays at 3:00, they will present a brief lesson and then about 11/2 hours of supervised play. We encourage any players who feel they would benefit from this type of format to attend the class.

If you have any questions call either Lynn (374-4669) or Carole (395-6360).

Teacher, Teacher!

The ACBL is intending to give free absolute beginner lessons at the Santa Clara Regional. We still need a few teachers to take on a chapter and a half from Audrey Grant’s book to complete the faculty. If you are able to help out (and possibly acquire yourself a few new paying students in the process), contact Mich Ravera at 533-7077.

Friday Evenings at the Club

Just a reminder that the Friday night game, limited to players with fewer than 300 masterpoints, is an exciting, friendly environment.  We offer a lesson at 6:30 and the game begins at 7:00.  We encourage all blossoming players to try our game.  If you don't have a partner, please come anyway.  Except for the last Friday of the month, at which time we have a Swiss team of four game, we don't send anyone home.  Please call either George Pledger (249-2674) or Carole Dietz (395-6360) for information.

Saturday Mornings at the Club

Carole Dietz is now running a Supervised Play on most Saturday Mornings at 10:00AM If you think that you would benefit from this format, call Carole at 395-6360 just to make sure that this isn’t the one Saturday when she isn’t doing it.

             Idioter’s Corner

In the late 1970’s broadcast video presentation “All in the Family”, Archie Bunker had an open mind. He just never heard an idea from anyone else that he ever thought had any merit.

It is in radical opposition to Mr. Bunker’s point of view, thanks to the suggestion of Rita Tingley, a considerable amount of help and vigilance from Lynn Yokel and others, (and a good bit of assembly work by me), we have a calendar in this issue. I won’t claim that I couldn’t have done it without Lynn’s and Rita’s help, but the fact is that I wouldn’t have done it without their help.

Of course the color version of the calendar would be much more striking, but I have limited ability to print color versions of this newsletter. I’ll leave some color versions the calendar at the club so that people who really need the color version can procure them. This edition of the calendar only goes through the end of August, so most of the Santa Clara Regional is not on it.

Dan gave his proper and deserving thanks to the retiring members of the board in his column, but neglected to mention in print that Dick Pitzer, a friend, a neighbor, and occasional Bridge partner of mine, had resigned from the board due to his impending move to Oregon. Dick has given us 13 good months of service as membership chairman and effective established Tuesday afternoons as a lesson time at the club. His position as membership chair will be ably filled by Will Watson and the lesson time that he established has been revived quite well by Lynn and Carole. His shoes as C-Player good guy, however, are a bit more difficult to fill. Hopefully, there will be a big contest to fill that position with no clear winner. That would be a good thing in my opinion.

The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave, San Jose. The Belmont Village game is held at Belmont at 1039 E. El Camino Real between Wolfe Rd and Lawrence Expressway. All games allow methods and systems permitted by the ACBL General Convention Chart. Those games identified as “MidChart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by those charts with proper disclosure.
