Prez Sez         by Dan Turkus

Have you all voted yet? The reason my name isn't on the ballot is I still have another year to go, so please stop writing my name in. The group of people that are running are going to make it hard to select from, as I feel all would do a great job.

Congratulations Don Nemiro on becoming a Platinum Life Master!

Lots of people have asked my where I've been lately, and the answer is Italy, The Netherlands and Germany. If you have extra time ask to see my pictures....they are already in an album, and the Bulbs (tulips, hyacinths, etc) were incredible!

Back to bridge stuff. I was able to sign agreements to keep our Sectionals at the Masonic Temple through 2008! Also, if you are wondering how come Palo Alto is having their Firecracker Sectional at the Hyatt in SAN JOSE, Ricky's was sold to a developer, and the Palo Alto Board called various members of our Board and pleaded and we voted to allow it this time.

For your information, at the All Western Regional over Labor Day, the ACBL will be offering free Bridge lessons for absolute beginners. I think it's a great idea. They are going to start the program during the Sacramento Regional and have asked we send a representative to observe. I am most interested in the success of the program. The ACBL said there will be local advertising to draw in the beginners. In the meantime, you can think of a few people who have said "One of these days I'd like to learn that game." and advise them of the upcoming lessons.

All new Life Masters who have not had their names on the Board yet, well, another board is on its way, and we will have your names on the wall soon. Sorry about the delay, you can blame me.

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.

Did you know that San Jose Bridge Center holds an Open Game EVERY Saturday Evening except during local tournaments? Game Time is 7:00 PM. Each Game is preceded by the “Deal of the Day”

Come Join Us!

The charge will be $20.00 and payable in advance.

                  Idioter’s Corner

In 1991, I was working on site in Seoul to help implement the first electronic Business-to-Business network in Korea. One particular feature that was on everyone’s list seemed unnecessary and, in fact, silly to me. A lot of unnecessary effort was being expended in an effort to figure out how to satisfy the requirement. After proper inquiry, I arrived at the truth of the matter. It turns out that the Most Esteemed Managing Director had made an off-handed comment to one of the technical managers and, somehow or another, this comment had been treated as a kind of sacred dogma. When I mentioned to those whose task it was actually to verify the system that the Managing Director was unlikely ever to log on to the system, it wasn’t so much a case of an embarrassed Emperor having been tricked by an unscrupulous fabric salesperson as a nudist Emperor having a good laugh at the expense of his subjects!

It is with this though in mind that I remind people actually to check the rules before criticizing others for violating them. In some cases the rules are not as commonly supposed.

It has little to do with sacred dogma, but did you think that you were missing some master points that you earned back in 2003? Well, I was pretty sure that I was missing a very small sliver of gold. It was easy to tell in my case since a small sliver is all the gold that I have earned. I used our web site as evidence and e-mailed to masterpoints@acbl.org and they took care of it. Fifty-nine other people also earned points in Unit NAP qualifying event. All of them will receive the points that they earned from this event. If you think that you are missing points from other events, a copy of the results page from our website seems to be sufficient evidence.
