I hope that you all had a good time at our Sectional!
Our table count was up considerably (by about 37 tables), although that
sounds great, last year our Sectional followed the Nationals in Reno, and last
year's table count was down 20%. So bottom line, we made a profit again! Be
sure to thank
Our next event is a Wine and Cheese Unit
Game honoring Jim Hayashi. Game time will be
Then on
May 14th we are going to have a Unit Swiss Teams game, so put your team
together!
It's time
for Unit elections again, so if you know of someone that is dedicated to the
Game and likes Pizza, please nominate them. We will be calling all nominees to
make sure they are willing to serve and have the time. The time involved is a
monthly meeting, of about one hour, on the 1st Wednesday of each month. We
plan all the Unit games (not the Club games), schedule our Sectionals, and
have input to the ACBL among other things. Now is your time to be heard! I have
truly enjoyed my time on the board and would recommend trying at least one term.
It's your chance to give something back to our Bridge Community.
We now
have scheduled our Unit Member Appreciation Game and dinner, and this year it
is NOT on Father's Day. In
fact it is going to be on July 10th, and the Unit will be taking all the members
of our Unit out to dinner. Sorry, it will not be at Fung
Lum, as they have closed. Have any of you tried The
Sonoma Chicken Coop? One of our members brought it up at one of our Board
meetings, saying how great it was. So, prior to committing my vote, I went
there a few times! Try it for breakfast. Eggs Benedict...yum!
That's it
for this month. so I'll see ya
at the tables.
Sectional Tournament
by
It appears that our tournament was another success!
A special
thanks to all who donated food for our hungry players. We tried to provide more
fresh fruit and vegetables to compensate
for all the wonderful sweets. Our directors seemed to handle everything with their usual courtesy and efficiency.
A special thanks to
Richard Sarsfield who agreed to be our on call caddy
in the event one failed to show up. Sunday, our busiest day of the tournament,
we in fact had a no show caddy. A quick call to Richard and he was there in a
matter of minutes and helped keep things running smoothly.
Our very competent Co-Chair, Teddi
Fiero, was a continuous help in making sure all was
in order in between sessions. Our hard working President, Dan Turkus, commented
that, since the players knew more goodies were being brought out, an immediate procession
to the food table ensued whenever Teddi or I went to
the kitchen.
We received a very positive response to the new 2
PM start time on Friday and will probably keep this the same for our next
Sectional, but will allow an additional 15 minutes for our Sunday break since
an hour was not quite enough. We will also keep the Sunday Swiss to seven
rounds of eight boards.
So, thanks to all for coming and supporting our
tournament. For without all your participation and good cheer I do not think
the tournament would have been so successful.
If any one has any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Idioter’s
Corner
At
a moment of high tension during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, President
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was implored to take the advice of United Nations
ambassador Adlai Stevenson with the admonition “You know, almost half the
people in this country think that that man ought to have been president.” Stevenson
had lost the two previous elections for president by relatively narrow margins.
It is rumored that the president’s only retort was “… and the other half thinks
that Nixon ought to have been president.”
It is with that thought in mind that I report that I did
receive comments upon my editorial judgment in omitting my column from these
pages last month. Some people didn’t seem to miss it. Others wished that I had
chosen to cut something else.
The Board has given me broad authority to publish whatever
I deem proper and to go to six pages if I feel the need. I do intend to go to a
six-page format as soon as the content that I receive justifies it and my
schedule in designing the new format permits it. Last month, however, the
humane solution was to skip my own column. The six-page format, which ought to
debut next month, should insure that I’m not required to delay my comments
again.
As Dan and Tania have said elsewhere in these pages, I
also was pleased with the conduct of our sectional. In November I mentioned
that it requires hard work not to be noticed (except perhaps when putting out
the goodies). Tania and Teddi were able to work hard
enough not to be noticed again this time. Having attended a few tournaments
where my fingers grew numb from the cold, equipment didn’t arrive until the
middle of the second session, and where I was poisoned by the overpriced food,
I can assure everyone that tournaments don’t just happen because someone puts a
note in the Forum and shows up with a couple of dozen decks of cards. People
come from all over to play in our
Sectional. I don’t think that their reason is solely that they enjoy getting up
early on a Saturday morning and fighting traffic!
Because I cut my column last
month, I didn’t get to tell you that I took a little vacation. Among the other
things that I did was to play in the San Luis Obispo Bridge Club at the
Tying together Jeff Hack’s comments about designating a
card from dummy and what I’ve written before about petty rudeness, I recently saw
someone earn an instant suspension. Sharon and I were sitting East-West where
the man declaring had won a trick in dummy. He called “spade” and his partner
obliged by playing the lowest one. Of course,
