I called the IRS to determine how we can make contributions to
our building fund tax deductible. I was nicely asked to please call back after
April 15, as they were experiencing a "very high volume of
calls" from people trying to get there taxes done. I wonder if after the 15th,
I will get the excuse that all the people who filed their taxes with extensions
are calling like crazy, trying to beat the next deadline. So the saga
continues!
Our next Unit game is March 26th for the Ace of Clubs/Mini McKinney
event. If you came in first in your bracket, you get a FREE PLAY. If you
didn't, you should come down and enjoy the competition! It would be sweet
revenge to win the event when you didn't come in first in your category. By the
way, did I mention that Unit games give you more points than club games. They
are right up there with Sectionals, but the points are black.
Get ready for our Sectional at the Masonic on the first weekend of
April, a flyer should be located on one of the following pages, or pick one up
at the Club.
Following the Sectional is a special Unit game at the end of
April honoring Jim Hayashi. Jim is a truly generous person, the one who
kept our old computer working. He loads all the programs, trouble shoots the
system, all on his own time with very little recognition from anyone.
He did something special for my Grand National Team consisting of Ed Lee,
George Humphrey (now moved to San Diego) and Susan Zimmerman, now Susan Cook
who move up to Eureka to hug some trees, (I know it wasn't for the Bridge.)
Anyway back to Jim, after we won the right to represent District

At the
President's Regional the dummy had
♥7
♣Q6 and I held only ♣JTx
Declarer
playing another suit said "Play Anything", I said to play the
♣Q. Dummy refused and pulled the ♥7. I called the director. Before the director
was located the declarer said that it truly didn't matter and played the
♣Q. This was after 3 minutes and some unhappiness.
This lead
me to research this further. The following law is clear on the subject.
Law 46, item 5:
5. No Suit
or Rank Designated
If
declarer indicates a play without designating either a suit or rank (as by
saying, ``play anything'', or words of like import), either defender may
designate the play from dummy.
I also
found the following written by our own Stu Goodgold on the Bridge Usergroup.
law 43 states:
A.
Limitations on Dummy
1. General
Limitations
(a)
Calling the Director
Unless
attention has been drawn to an irregularity by another player, dummy should not
initiate a call for the Director during play.
(b)
Calling Attention to Irregularity
Dummy may
not call attention to an irregularity during play.
(c)
Participate in or Comment on Play
Dummy must
not participate in the play, nor may he communicate anything about the play to
declarer.
So dummy
may not call the director as you suggest. Moreover, dummy may not call
attention to the irregularity that declarer has not designated
a card according to the correct procedure. You may wish to argue that 1c) means
dummy cannot select a card if declarer said 'play anything' but dummy has to do
something. If the opponents choose not to select a
card per their rights, dummy must act on his own.
But
in this case we definitely selected a card. In fact dummy refused to obey our
instructions which is a clear violation of Law 46. My advice is don't say
"Play Anything" even if it doesn't matter.
