HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. It was great seeing so
many of you down at the Monterey Regional.
Thanks so much to Barbara Tiernan for making the first
contribution to the Unit's building fund. Wouldn't it be great to own our own
facility? We are currently checking to see if the fact that the Unit is a
non-profit organization makes contributions to the building fund are tax
deductible.
Also, thanks again to Barbara for funding our new
dishwasher (A couple of months back) and our new stainless refrigerator! Barbara,
your generosity is really appreciated.
Regarding the old refrigerator, this story should
be entertaining. I brought the new refrigerator down to the club, installed it,
and put the old one in the box that the new one came in, including all the packing
materials. Then took the box (old refrig inside) to the corridor between the
men' and ladies restrooms, went to the restroom, and came out in time to see a
Pickup truck rapidly leaving the parking lot. The old refrigerator apparently
has a new home! I should have put on the box, "No Returns."
How many people would be interested in a weekly
One of our
players mentioned to me that they had forgotten and left their convention card
holder at the club, and went to our lost and found basket, and found only
the convention cards minus the holder. If that person with the holder would
have gone to the Tuesday morning
Did you receive your post card showing our next 3
Unit Games? If not, our next Unit Game will be January 22nd, which is Saturday
evening at
I'm sure you have all heard by now that Fung Lum
is going to close this year, thus we will need another Restaurant capable of
seating about 180 people for our Unit's Member Appreciation Game. Does anyone
know of a place that can handle our group, or should we hire a caterer? If you
do know of a place please let one of the Board members know. Thanks in advance.
That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the
tables!
Conscience Court
by Larry Wagner
In a recent club game, Panette Talia was declarer
in 5♦.
Dummy had 5 diamonds and a club void. Panette had the singleton ♠A.
After winning the spade lead and pulling trumps in two rounds, she played the
heart suit for two losers. She then showed her hand and claimed. After a
cursory check, we scored the result and returned our card to the board.
As
we removed the cards for the next hand, Panette stopped us and admitted that
she did not have enough trumps to reach 11 tricks on a cross-ruff. We
reconsidered the hand and further analysis confirmed her statement.
Although
we could have been more careful initially, Panette showed
extremely admirable behavior and deserves recognition. She is a role model
for everyone who plays this game.
Top Ten Games of 2004
by
For the
second year in a row Fia Bosklopper and K P Cheng, both with different partners
from last year appear in the top ten games of the year. This means that among
the 15 people whose names appeared in last year’s list, only two have managed
to repeat.
Also
worthy of mention, Celso and Ching Ravelo managed two top-grade games in 2004
including the top spot. No one who has every played with them or against them
will be surprised to see the names of Judy Fisher, Larry Wagner, Delores
Clinch, or Barbara Barlow, Robert Ritz or Bill Garfield in the list. All of
these people had multiple appearances in the monthly top ten and usually other
games that narrowly missed the top ten. I’ve spoken to most of other first-timers
(trying to pick up a few secrets). All of them had comments to the effect that
“I guess that every dog has his day” or “If I really knew, I’d have done it
again the next week.”
So, here
are the top ten games by percentage. Scores by ineligible competitors or in
team games or games in which some of the competitors played less that 18 boards
are not included in the list.

Idioter’s Corner
I’m happy to report that some people actually read my column and some even tell me when they agree or disagree. Last month’s column provoked such a comment.
David Gambelin had a different take on my request for everyone to use the STOP card before making jump bids. His comment was to the effect that, as long as we are trying to get everyone to comply with the rules, we should get them to comply with the rule that requires some sort of visual indication of alerts. You see, that blue ALERT card or strip is extremely useful in drawing the attention of people who can see well, but can’t hear as well. He reminded me that, if opponents don’t hear the alert and you have made no attempt to indicate it visually, that your opponents may be due the same result as if you had failed to alert. The ACBL alert procedure also requires that you wave the ALERT card or tap the ALERT strip when you give an announcement.
In other forums, I have suggested the addition of RANGE, FORCING, TRANSFER, and SHORT cards to the bidding box. I am almost certain that I saw such cards (except for SHORT the announcement of which was added in 2002. It was previously alerted) in some the bidding boxes at the club back in 2000. Nothing stops you from making your own.
