Our next event is our Fall Sectional (October 29-31), and new inductee to the Bridge Hall of Fame: Peter Weischel, has agreed to be our speaker on Saturday afternoon before the afternoon session! We need Caddies for our Sectional. If you have someone to Caddy, or you would like to be a Caddy, please call Tania at (408) 993-0265.
The next event after the Sectional will be a Wine and Cheese Party on November 27th at 7:00 PM. No whining if you don't bid right!
We're also trying to get the big room for our annual Holiday Pot-Luck Party. We are shooting for the 12th of December, but that could change, so read next month's column for a potential update.
We are going to try something new this year with our Membership Directory. For $25.00 we will let you have your business card copied and printed in the directory. We guarantee that we will not produce another new Directory for 6 months, so that's a pretty cheap ad. We do reserve the right to refuse anyone's business (majority Board Vote). We are guessing that there will be 10 cards per page, so if you're interested give me a call at (408) 395-6944.
Then in 2005, our first Unit game will be to honor our newest Grand Life Master: Rose Meltzer. We are going to call that game Rose Bowl II! If you haven't been reading my column, or are new to our Unit, or new to duplicate Bridge; Rose Bowl I was when Rose became the 1st Woman World Champion on a mixed team! Rose, that leaves you a challenge to do something special again, so we can celebrate a future Rose Bowl III!
That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables!
Pro-Am 10/22 by Carole Dietz
Please Participate in our "Pro-Am" game on Friday night, October 22nd.
As you might know, our Friday night game is limited to players with fewer than 200 MP's. Always eager to improve their bridge skills, participants in our game would welcome friendly critical comment from more experienced players. An effective way to impress them with modern conventions, play of the hand, defense, etc., is to have those aspects of bridge explained, in a constructive and considerate manner, as they occur at the table.
Wouldn't you like to be known as the person who started someone on their road to becoming a Life Master. You can achieve that worthwhile distinction by signing up to play in our game, October 22nd.
If you have any questions, please call either me, Carole Dietz, at 395-6360 or George Pledger at 249-2674

Games Around Town by
Ray Crist
I am leaving the area permanently for Virginia. I am asking Carol Woodward to take over my games. I have dropped the Wednesday game at Westmont altogether. I will be handing off the Thursday game at Belmont of Sunnyvale and, hopefully, the Tuesday game at Bridgepoint.
Idioter’s
Corner
I’ve often said that whether the optimist or pessimist sees the glass as half-empty or half-full depends upon whether he is thirsty or in a drinking contest.
I was reminded of this recently when I was playing south and the player who was playing north commented as he was scoring the first round that the board was a “cold top”. This comment requires even more optimism than I possess.
I was also reminded of how seemingly inconsequential acts may affect others. My partner’s and my ambitions of a return to NAP District Finals were dashed by the fact that two pairs, against whom my partner and I weren’t even playing, didn’t have time to play a board. The factoring (which is mathematically sound, by the way) resulted in a close finish coming up against us. I’ve heard that the Federal Election Commission is trying to hire Will Watson to adjudicate the upcoming presidential election, but that’s probably just an unfounded rumor.
