Prez Sez by Dan Turkus

The nominations for our new Board of Directors should be completed by the time you read this, so the nomination box will now be converted to the Ballot box.  Hopefully, we will have ballots available on Saturday the 15th, and we expect you to vote!

Some people have been giving me a bad time about having our Membership game on Father's Day again this year.  Well folks, is it my fault that so many people want to get married in June?  And do these starry eyed lovers want to get married on Father's Day?  Noooo.  So that's the available day, and all the Father's I know like playing Bridge on any day of the year, and they don't mind the great snack at Fung Lum either, so make a Father happy and bring him to our Member Appreciation Game and Dinner on June 20th.  That would be FATHER'S DAY.

By the way, if anyone knows of another venue where about 180 people can be fed, with quality courses, please let us know, and we will check into the possibility of a game on a day other than FATHER'S DAY in 2005.

I heard our last Unit game on STAC week had 14 tables.  And the winners are listed on our Web Site at WWW.sjbridge.org  Congratulations to all of you Silver point winners.

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.

Wednesday Morning

by Rita Tingley with Mich Ravera

Everybody said that they really wanted to play Bridge on Wednesday morning, but either couldn’t make it to a 10:30 game or didn’t want to play in an open game. Well, they were telling the truth! Our game has grown to about 11 tables. We have a 0-299 section and an open section. Game Time is 11:00 AM on Wednesdays at the San Jose Bridge Center. Please come join us.

Belmont Village Game
                          by Ray Crist

I have cancelled my game in Evergreen. I couldn't make it go.

However, my game in Sunnyvale is growing. It has reached the five table mark. Help make it grow further. It is at the Belmont Village of Sunnyvale, 1039 E. El Camino Real.

More Good News! I have just arranged with Belmont Village of San Jose. 500 S. Winchester - near Santana Row to conduct an Easybridge course and game on Thursday nights 7-9PM. If you know anyone who is so unfortunate as not to play Bridge, but who wants to learn, please contact me at (408) 738-1444. My sources at the ACBL, however, have told me that it is suicidal to begin an EasyBridge class at the beginning of summer, so I may try to start a game there instead.

                 Idioter’s Corner

Yogi Berra was often misquoted as having said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Yogi, himself, actually never said any such thing. According to Yogi, he likely said something like, “Look, we aren’t out until we’re out, but we’re so far behind right now that our winning is hard to imagine.” In fact, they weren’t out. They managed to achieve a tie on the last day of the season and then to win a playoff.

In Bridge, it is often necessary to give a precise explanation and often difficult to make certain that opponents have actually understood. We all know that giving just the common name of the convention is never sufficient, but proper explanations of some conventions require a recitation befitting a Gregorian Chant or a visitor from Remulak.

One must keep in mind that, although you may be giving the same explanation for the fifteenth time that week (what good would that convention be if you never used it?), opponents may be hearing it for the first time ever.

At the San Mateo Regional I was actually delayed in an open event (as I discovered later) because of a director call resulting from opponents alerting a simple acceptance of a transfer and giving the explanation “tends to deny four.” I actually play this convention and am not sure that I would have recognized it from the explanation! Perhaps, a better explanation would have been “She would have done something else with four spades or three spades and a maximum hand.”
