Prez Sez by Dan Turkus

CONGRATULATIONS Rose Meltzer, our newest Grand Life Master!  (See separate article, Page 3)

Congratulations also go to Jo Ann Rogers and Alka Mathur who won the first overall at our Sectional for the 0-20 and got trophies!  Also, congrats go to Douglas and Don Schmickrath who won the 1st overall medals in the 0-5 division.  Do me a favor and introduce yourselves to me. I want to know who to watch out for in the club games.

A giant THANK YOU to Alex Tampilang for helping me set up the tables and chairs at our Sectional.  You all must think that we (Alex and I) needed the workout.  Thanks Alex.  Also, thanks go to Phyllis and Tania for another well organized smoothly run Sectional.  Thanks also to those who brought all the generous donations of fabulous food and pastries and helping to eliminate hunger in the Bridge community.

Apparently having a Sectional the week following a National tournament held in Reno is not that great of an idea.  Either everyone was tired of Bridge after 10 days in Reno, or Reno successfully removed their spendable cash at the other tables (Blackjack, Craps, etc.)  Anyway, our attendance was down about 20%, but we still squeaked out a profit, and those that attended did eat well!

It is election time again for our Unit, so the time to nominate someone you would like to see on the Unit Board of Directors is now.  I would really like to see someone on the Board that has under 50 points, so that we don't loose sight of the needs of our newer members.  Existing board members whose terms are over are Art Fonda, Bill Langlois, George Pledger, Gigi Spinazze, Lynn Yokel and yours truly.  Look out for the gold box on top of the computer, and nominate someone today.  By the way, all nominees will be contacted before the elections to verify their willingness to serve.

Our next Unit game will be May 8th at 7 PM. and will be offering SILVER POINTS to those that finish in the top groups.  In fact the whole week of May 3-9 will have Silver points at all the club games, 'cause it's STAC week!

Our Unit Member Appreciation dinner at Fung Lum has been scheduled for June 20th.  That happens to be on the same Sunday of Father's day.  More about this next month, but save the date!

See ya at the tables

 Friday Night at the Club
             by Carole Dietz

On Friday, March 19, we held our first Swiss Team game.  It was met with great enthusiasm by our players, many of whom had never played in that type of game before.  We scored on a win/loss basis and EVERYONE earned at least a fraction of a master point.  Because Swiss is very popular at tournaments, we will be offering this type of game regularly, once a month on the fourth Friday night.  We would like to invite anyone with fewer than 200 masterpoints to join us and gain experience in Swiss Team play.  You needn't have a team, just show up and we will assure you that you will play.

Our game begins at 7:00 and is usually over by 10:00. Every Friday night at 6:30, we offer a lesson on bidding and playing problems suggested by our players.  We also try to explain popular conventions as well as bridge rules and etiquette and records available at the conclusion of play.

We are certain that you will find our Friday night game a wonderful learning experience as well as a very FRIENDLY, stress-free game.  Please join us.

2 New Weekday Games

                         by Ray Crist

Nestled in the valley of the evergreens is a quiet glade where bridge players can gather for a friendly game and lunch. It is an open game played at a retirement center called BridgePointe located at 4855 San Felipe Road on the corner of Yerba Buena and San Felipe Roads. Nothing could be more conducive to a good game bridge. The game is small now but with your help we can make it grow. The Wednesday 11AM game only ACBL sanctioned game in the Evergreen area.

Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Sunnyvale is an oasis from the cares of the world where old friends can meet for a game of bridge. This game is open to those with fewer than 100 masterpoints. It includes lunch prepared by our host Belmont Village of Sunnyvale. Located at 1039 E. El Camino Real between Wolfe Road and Lawrence Expressway, this impressive new building is a retirement home that has invited us in to find respite from the daily cares of life. Game time is Thursday 10 AM. Come join us.

Rose Meltzer -- Grand Life Master
by Dan Turkus &
Mich Ravera

CONGRATULATIONS Rose Meltzer, our newest Grand Life Master!

Dan: What a feat! … and she did it so quickly.  It seems like just a couple of years ago that she reached 5,000. In fact I had the pleasure of playing with her then and what a great partner.  She played well enough to get us into the top 2 or 3, and kept saying “you're playing fine”, but let the truth be known. Rose is too nice of a person to give you a bad time about a bad lead or bid.  Way to go Rose, and many more successes to you.

Mich: Rose was the first female World Champion. She is also our unit’s second home grown Grand Life Master. She is the kind of player that we should all strive to be. She leaves opponents with two big smiles (and usually two even bigger zeros).

I first met Rose in the lobby of the DoubleTree Hotel in Sacramento. Being a native Californian, I tend not to be impressed with stardom however derived, but I was immediately impressed with Rose and continue to be to this day.

                 Idioter’s Corner

Justice Thurgood Marshall wrote many judicial opinions with which I disagree, but, in his retirement interview, gave one answer that lays bare all judicial obfuscation. When asked why he was retiring, he replied “I’m retiring because I’m old”.

In marked contrast to Justice Marshall, after just three terms on the Unit 507 Board, George Pledger announced a recent board meeting that he would not seek reelection once his term expires in June.  I count myself lucky to have served on the Board with George. George has done, and I expect will continue to do, many good things for Bridge in San Jose, not the least of which is the Friday night 199er game and answering the call to substitute for other directors.

This month I’ve been given the opportunity to write good things about several people. In addition to saying something good about George, I also want to say something good about the manner in which Tania and Phyllis organized our sectional.

The NABC in Reno was also well run. I had been warned about the table prices in advance and so was prepared for them, but I heard grumblings from other people about the prices. Reno has evolved some since the days of $0.99 buffets, hasn’t it?
