If you are wondering why I'm not listing a bunch of winners at the San
Mateo Regional, it's because I am writing his column prior to that event, and
have confidence in all of you winning most of the events!
Everybody please mark your calendars for our Pro/Am Unit game that will
occur on February 29th. We need lots of
Life Masters to match up in a random partnership draw. These newer players
really appreciate the knowledge passed on by our seasoned players.
The following weekend we are having another Unit game to award the Mini
McKinney/Ace of Clubs awards. If you
won your bracket in either category, you get to play for free! I can tell you already, I will be paying to
play, but the competition is worth it!
Newer players, please be aware that if anything strange happens at the
table, please call a director to make sure your rights are protected. After all,
the director can help you at the time the abnormality occurs, not after you
have played the hand and moved to the next table or next hand. That's why we pay them the "big
bucks." Also, Carol Dietz is our
Unit Recorder, which means if another player commits a foul that really sticks
in your craw, talk to her about what and how a complaint can be lodged against
an offending or offensive player.
We should now have a new dishwasher.
Please, rinse your mugs after using them and make sure no stir sticks and
other items unsuitable for a dishwasher get loaded into the machine. Remember
to please clean up after yourself. The Directors have enough work to do without
having to clean up after us.
A few of our avid readers have asked for some new material for our book
exchange. Do you have a bunch, or a few
books just collecting dust at home? Why not get the jump on your spring
cleaning and bring some books down to the club?
That's it for now, so I'll see ya at the tables.
In response to
numerous requests, the time of the Wednesday morning game directed by Rita
Tingley will be changed to 11:00 AM beginning February 18.
In response to numerous other requests, the game will now be held in two sections. In addition to the current open section, it will also have a 0-299 section. Hand records will be provided.

Thank You, Barbara Tiernan
by Carole Dietz
One of our newer players, Barbara Tiernan, has paid for our new dishwasher. Barbara truly must enjoy playing bridge! As everyone knows, our old dishwasher was just going through the cleaning motions. Most players knew that they should examine their "clean" coffee cups before putting them to their mouth. We no longer have that problem thanks to Barbara.
Everyone appreciates her generous gesture. When you
see her at a game, be sure to thank her and give her a top board.

Once again ACBL District 21 put on a wonderful tournament in San Mateo. The Staff at the Marriott, in marked contrast to the Hyatt seemed actually to want us to be there.
The Japanese have a saying that you spend “three years on top of the rock”. I discovered during the San Mateo Regional that, in Bridge, this interval could just as easily have been estimated at thirty years.
Many players, some of whom I would even describe as “Top Flight”, seem
to equate “Standard”, “Permitted by the General Convention Chart”, and “Not
Requiring Pre-Alerts”.
I don’t pretend to be an expert on these topics, but some comparatively
benign methods such as leading low from a doubleton; systematically opening a
4-card major with a longer minor; and systems using a strong and forcing 1♦, 1NT, or 2♦ opener all require pre-alerts.
A 2NT opener
that shows at least 5-4 in the minors, for instance, is specifically permitted
under the General Convention Chart. I know of no one who considers this
standard, and I am thankful that almost everyone who uses it pre-alerts it.
Usually, the pre-alert isn’t required because of the 2NT
opener itself, but rather because of a forcing 1♦ opener (which does
require a pre-alert). People who need to pre-alert an opening bid often find it
convenient to include all of the nonstandard openers on a pre-alert card.

All games are held at the San
Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, inside the
Campbell Community Center except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at
Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse),
Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700
Saratoga Ave., San Jose.
All games allow methods and
systems permitted by the ACBL General Convention Chart. Those identified as
“MidChart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by those charts with
proper disclosure.
Check club postings, visit our
web site at http://www.SJBridge.org or call for the exact dates and times of
the Special STaC and Special Unit games, and of the 499er Potluck.
Games are often reduced,
relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
