What a month!
It started out great with the "Barlow Bowl" in which we honored Ed
Barlow for achieving Grand Life Master status. For those of you that
don't know, that is 10,000 points. Way to go Ed and what a great party. Ed had
several of his teammate with whom he won the Senior Swiss at the Nationals, as
well as the gentleman he played with when he made Life Master just 40 years
ago. I have never been in a club game with so many Grand Life Masters before.
Needless to say, you really had to concentrate. Now the food! Wow, can Gigi
prepare for a gang. We had triple cream brie and 5 or 6 or 7 other cheeses to
choose from, fruits, vegetables including yellow, red, orange, green and some
other peppers, croissant sandwiches, quiche (and I saw men eating this), not to
mention the Spinazze Merlot and Chardonnay wine. All in attendance had a great
time.
We have two other
club members very close to attaining the Grand Life Master status as well, and
they are Fran Dickman and Rose Meltzer. Hurry up you two. You know I never turn
down an invitation to a party, or a game for that matter.
We also had our
Sectional, and let me apologize now for having missed the fact when scheduling,
that it fell right in the middle of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish High Holy Days.
Next year in 2004 our reserved time falls on Yom Kippur, so we moved that
Sectional back to the end of October. Hopefully all you ghosts and goblins will
find time to be at the tables, as Halloween is Sunday night, so we will try
moving game time up so you can get home in time to hand out treats.
Our Sectional
attendance was up 3 tables from last year. Thanks to Tania Moalem, our new
Sectional Chairperson, who did a fabulous job with the organization of all the
food and treats. Also many thanks go to all of you who brought sandwiches,
cookies and everything else.

Another busy month
is coming up, starting with the NAOP (North American Open Pairs) play-offs at
our club on Sunday the 19th. Then on Sunday, November 16th we are going
to have Senior Appreciation Day. I can't remember (really) if you need to be 85
or only 80 to play for free, but that should be found else where in this
publication. To those that qualify for the free plays, you will not need an ID,
as we know who you are!
That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.
Card sense is when it's technically right to do something, the little man that sits on my shoulder or anyone else's shoulder says, "Don't do that." And you say to yourself, "Well, wait a minute, that's the right way to play." And he says, "Yeah, but you don't wanna play that way." That instinct is card sense. It's almost an ability to feel where the cards are. It's something that you can't buy, you can't find; you're born with -- The ability to do the right thing at the wrong time or really to do the wrong thing at the right time. -- Barry Crane
I'd like a review of the bidding with all the original inflections.
Regardless of what sadistic impulses we may harbor, winning bridge means helping partner avoid mistakes. -- Frank Stewart
A player who can't defend accurately should try to be declarer. -- Alfred Sheinwold
The real secret of the expert is to make logic seem like flair. – Hugh Kelsey
I favor light opening bids. When you're my age, you're never sure they're going to get back to you in time. -- Oswald Jacoby at 77
Your play was much better tonight, and so were your excuses.
We play forcing hesitations.
A fellow had made a bad bid and gone for -1400. "I'm sorry," he said to his partner, "I had a card misplaced." Asked his partner innocently, "Only one card?" -- Charles Goren

Idioter’s Corner
I had the experience of playing in the superbly organized and superbly run sectional on the last weekend in September. Tania Moalem deserves to be commended for her organization and Diane Barton Payne deserves to be commended for her directing. When a tournament goes as well as this one, it is easy to forget how difficult it is to put on and to run a tournament. All of us who have ever played in a tournament that wasn’t well run know what I mean.
While I am on the subject of people who seem to get things done well, Gigi Spinazze and Will Watson also similarly got the job done at our unit games each of the last couple of months. Again, they did it so well that it is easy to forget that it doesn’t have to go that way.
I have a question about game times for everyone. It is common on the last day of tournaments to have team games with a break at a time that doesn’t correspond to a regular mealtime for most people. Would anyone be in favor of a “pack a lunch” Sunday team schedule? Perhaps matches could be scheduled every hour or so all day without an extended break. In order to balance various other scheduling factors, the board is considering exactly this as a possibility for an upcoming sectional. If you have an opinion about this, don’t keep it to yourself! I think that it’s worth a try.
I discovered a week or two ago that even one of our club directors wasn’t aware that transfers that are not directly over a natural no trump bid (as well as those that don’t transfer into a major suit) require an alert rather than an announcement. I think that announcements are a good concept that should be expanded. In addition to other transfers, my first candidate would be the three most common meanings of a 2♦ opening bid. “Weak”, “Majors”, or “Three Suits” would be my suggested announcements.
