Prez Sez by Dan Turkus
Once again, congratulations ED BARLOW, our newest Grand Life Master.
And to celebrate Ed, we are having a Unit game in his honor on Saturday
evening September 20th. Why not show up and see if you can earn a good board
from Ed. I know that he doesn't give away many!
I hope you all did well at the Regional in Santa Clara. Many
thanks to all the people that helped out covering the Partnership and
Hospitality desk during the Regional. I would name all your names, but
then there wouldn't be enough room in this paper to have our weekly results.
Thanks again for coming to the Unit's aid after that last minute call
from the ACBL.
Our library is starting to grow. In fact I will be removing some
old, old books and trying to trade them to another club, or just donate them to
some charity. Any ideas?
Remember our Sectional at the end of the month. Tania Moalem, our
new Sectional Chair would appreciate people to make cookies, sandwiches, etc.,
for the event. Look for a signup sheet at the club, also Brochures at the Club
as well, just in case you didn't get one at the Regional. We will also
need a few people to help set up the Sectional on Friday the 26th at around
11:00 AM. Hope to see many of you there, and thanks in advance for helping to
set up.
Did you know that most of the games post the results on our web site http://www.sjbridge.org, many times before you can get home from the game? That's it for this month. See ya at the tables!
Friday Night at the Club
by
Carole Dietz
The Friday night game is going "great
guns." A loyal group of players with fewer than 200 masterpoints is
enjoying playing in our friendly game and benefiting from the post-game
discussion. However, we find that we are discussing the hands into the
wee hours of the night. A lesson, the subject to be determined by the
group is offered at 6:30. We will still have a brief discussion of
the hands after the game.
A free play is awarded to the pair that has the lowest score of the evening. Please join us and see if you can avoid winning a free play.

One advantage of bad bidding is that you get practice at playing atrocious
contracts. -- Alfred Sheinwold
I'm not sure whether glory or masterpoints is first on the list, but I know learning to play better is definitely last. -- Eddie Kantar
When I take a 50-50 chance I expect it to come off 8 or 9 times out of 10. -- Hideous Hog
Where's the hand you held during the auction? --Jan Janitschke, when dummy hits.

Do you know anybody who
wants to learn to play bridge?
Lessons for brand new players also available
Starting September 14, the Every Sunday afternoon at 5:00 PM Faye Parsons will present a series of more commonly used bridge conventions, which will enable the participant to improve their techniques in a logical and progressive manner.
The participants should have fun while learning the fundamental concepts of good bridge bidding, play, defense and the use of conventions and play a preset hand to help in their mastering of the concept.
Some of the topics planned in this series:
· Negative, cooperative, optional, delayed and other doubles, and their rebids and responses
· Overcalls, two suited overcalls, Michaels cue bids and the unusual No Trump convention.
· Blackwood, Gerber and Key cards.
· Leads and Signals, opening leads against suit and no trump contracts.
· Two over one, 1NT forcing, handling interferences and much more.

Idioter’s Corner
I had the experience of working the partnership desk at the All Western Regional. What impressed me the most about the experience was the difference in the requirements that people place on the partnership desk. These ranged from “I just want to play” to “I only want to play with someone who has more masterpoints than I do” in an event whose upper limit was five points higher than their total.
I also noticed the difference between people who wanted to hook up as soon as possible for the game that was three days later and those who wanted make the absolute best match and were willing to wait until three minutes before game time.
The point is that, just as people make different requirements on the partnership desk, they make different requirements of the game itself. It’s amazing how much one can learn in just an hour of listening to what people have to say!
