Prez Sez       by Dan Turkus

Congratulations Ed Barlow.  Our new and Unit grown Grand Life Master. Ed, soon the Directors will be telling you that you have more points than all the other players in your section sitting your direction.  Wow!

I missed the last Board meeting, thus I find I was reelected as Prez again, in fact all the officers were reelected to their former positions.  Thanks to all of you that ran, those that were elected and those that served on our previous Board.  I really appreciate the support you all have given and all the work you have done for the Unit.

Thank you Faye Parsons for starting another Easy Bridge class on August 17. Everybody please help support this program by taking a few postcards or brochures on the Easy Bridge and pass them out at work, or around your neighborhood.  I personally took a couple of hundred of them and put them on car windshields at the Pruneyard Shopping Center.  If I got any of your cars, I hope that you put it on a car that didn't have one.

Our new Sectional Chair is Tania Moalem.  Please show her the way, as you did for Phyllis Vierra, and Phyllis, thanks for a job well done!

Our book exchange is going great, and I noticed someone even brought in a VHS (video) tape, so I brought one down too, and both are gone already.  Please, when you bring in new books or tapes, put them on the left side as you're looking at the window.

Our next Unit function is going to be a Wine and Cheese Party on Saturday Night the 17th of August. Hopefully this edition will be in your hands prior to that game. Gigi is in charge of the wine, so you know it won't be that "Two buck Chuck!"

That's it for this month. See ya at the tables!

In Memorium

Don Perry & Florence Switzer

The lives of two wonderful people, Don Perry and Florence Switzer, have both recently come to an end. Their memories will live on in those who knew them. All of us in the Bridge community will miss their smiles and their company at the table.

Ed Barlow: Grand Life Master
                            by Bill Langlois

Our unit now has its first homegrown grandmaster (we’ve imported one or two). Ed Barlow joined the elite group a few weeks ago.

The rank of Grandmaster has two separate requirements: ten thousand master points and a first-place finish in a nationally ranked event with no upper master point limit. Ed fulfilled both this summer, with the win coming at the Long Beach NABC.

We can be proud of Ed for reasons other than his playing skills. Every Grandmaster has those. Ed has more important attributes, integrity and courtesy, shared by many Grandmasters but unfortunately not all.  He’s joined a band of angels, before the downfall of Lucifer. I’ve been fortunate to have him for a partner on many occasions and can vouch for his active ethics and impeccable deportment.  He also places a high value on field protection: he won’t give away your match points, either by misguided generosity towards irregularities or by careless play near the end of a bad session.

One national title doesn’t tell the whole story of Ed’s experience in high-level play. He also has several second and third place finishes in national events. On one occasion his team was half a match point out of first place.  The win at Long Beach was no fluke.

Congratulations, Ed.

              Idioter’s Corner

I know that in last month’s editorial about game times I said that I would publish the views of anyone who disagreed with me, but so far, I have only received feedback from Jeff Hack, who said that he sometimes made decisions about which tournaments to attend by the time of day and the speed of the games offered. Jeff, it seems, likes fast pairs.

In the mean time the ACBL board of directors approved an experiment with 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM starting times at the spring NABC (with the cooperation of the sponsoring organization). We will see what happens, but I hope that 7:30 PM games are neither eliminated nor relegated to “side game” status. On the other hand, if that 7:30 “side” game happens to be a compact Swiss team game, maybe everyone will gain.
