Prez Sez       by Dan Turkus

The day you all have been waiting for has now been scheduled, so set June 15th aside for our Membership Unit Appreciation Day.  Dinner will be at Fung Lum, starting at 4:30 PM, and will have a seven (7) course feast followed by Bridge of course.  The best part is, if you are a member of our Unit, everything is free.  That's right, no charge for dinner or bridge.  Last year we had 47 tables at this event, including a novice section (which we intend to include again this year).  Can we beat that?

The Pro/Am game was a lot of fun, and we had 13 full tables. I kept hearing from the Ams as they got to our table, that they were learning so much. Everyone had a great time. I noticed there were a lot fewer Director calls at this event than at the wine and cheese game. Apparently, the number of Director calls goes up proportionately to the amount of wine consumed. I'll drink to that!

Our Unit STAC game on Saturday night May 10th had 14 tables. See our Web site (http://www.sjbridge.org/results/R030510E.htm) for the winners!

I hope that you all won the amount of Silver points you needed during STAC week.

The nominations are in. Now it is time to vote, so come on down to the club and fill out a Ballot. The following people, in alphabetic order, are running: Nagraj Alur, Stu Goodgold, Michael Migdol, Tanya Moalem, Rekha Nirula, Mich Ravera, Sharon Sava, Will Watson, Neil Webb, Marshall Yancey and Ray Yuenger. They must have heard that pizza is provided at the meetings, which last only one hour, once a month. If you don't like the above slate of candidates, you are welcome to write-in someone else (or yourself), but please make sure that person is willing to serve.

Have you noticed that some of the game scores are now available on our Web-site? Often times the scores will be on line before you get home from the game.  That Web site address is: www.sjbridge.org

See you at the tables, Dan

The playing area is beautiful. Come join us.

An Unusual Scoring Quiz  by Jeff Hack

This quiz assumes match point scoring. Each question refers to one hand of Duplicate Bridge. What are the results that score:

1.       Least Points on Defense? (1)

2.       Least Points as Declarer? (1)

3.       Most Points on Defense? (1)

4.       Most Points as Declarer? (1)

5.       Most Points as Declarer not vulnerable (1)

6.       Most Points as Declarer Doubled (1)

7.       How does declarer make 610 without an overtrick? (2)

8.       How does declarer score 2000 points vulnerable? (2)

Idioter’s Corner

Most months, a 75% game would land you either the first or second spot in the Top Ten. This month it would barely get you a third.

I had the pleasure of playing in the ProAm with Jeff Hack. I had heard of him previously but never met him. His submission of the Bidding quiz predates our playing together in the ProAm. I want to thank Jeff, both for playing with me in the ProAm and for his quiz.

I had missed this event in earlier years, but was glad that I was able to play in it this year. In spite of all of the cross words that I have personally heard partners speak to each other at other times, I heard none from any of the Pros at this event.

One wonders why getting your name on a plaque suddenly gives your partner the right to berate you. If we are required to take our partners away from the table in order to congratulate them on their good plays, people should be required to take their partners away from the table to give them a dressing down. While they are about it, maybe they should take their partners a LONG way away from the table to berate them -- Maybe even to the car -- Maybe they should even start the car. At that point, as long as they have the car started, they should choose one of a couple of alternatives:

1)    Plug the tailpipe and wait a couple of hours before returning to the game

2)    Engage one of the forward gears and make deliberate contact some solid object

3)    Back out of the parking place and drive to some other destination.

Yes, any of these will be considered rude and will make the movement a little awkward, but the other players and the directors will get over it (probably sooner than if they had kept playing). If they were that concerned about being rude, maybe they should just pick a different subject about which to berate their partners and a different time and place to do it!
