ATTENTION...If you have left a sweater or jacket on one of the three hooks closest to the sink, please claim them by April 30, or we will auction them off, or donate them to a local charity. Remember the three hooks closest to the sink.
If you missed the Mini McKinney/Ace of Clubs Unit game on Sunday, March 30, you missed out on a 12½-table game that had some of our Unit's most winning players playing. When all the dust settled, 1st overall, sitting East-West were K. P. Cheng and Daren Kuo with a blistering 73.86% game! First in B sitting the same direction were H. Zoellner and Alex Tampilang, and 1st C were Joan and Bob Rouse. Sitting North-South first A and B were Maxine and Ray Lubow and 1st in C were Matt Moore and Dan Rappaport. I was happy to see some of our newer player come out and try their luck against the stronger fields. Don't get discouraged, someday you will look back and say, "If I would have know this then, what a difference." If you didn't receive your reward, ask the director at the game you are attending, as I will have notified them all as to their location.
If you missed our Sectional, you missed Phyllis Vierra's greatest Sectional yet. Thank you Phyllis for a great job: organizing all the cookies, eclairs, fudge, lollypops, and a ton of stuff that I missed. Also, many thanks to those that brought goodies, and the setup team and tear down group. If you left a convention card holder at the tournament, I gathered them all up and they are at the club. Our attendance was also up 9 tables from last year! I was also able to sign up our Sectionals through the end of 2004 at the same San Jose Masonic Temple.
Thanks also go to Gary Soules for speaking on Constructive Preempts. Using his methods makes it easy for a pair to double an overcalling or interfering pair at a low level, and collect all the match points on the board. He also show how using the constructive preempt, one can easily find slams that the rest of the field might miss. It was very informative!
I know you all love this crazy game. Have you thought of remembering the Bridge Unit in your will? Wouldn't it be great to have our own building and be able to control our own destiny, and the destiny of San Jose Bridge for generations to come. We are going to start a building fund account, and I am currently checking into making contributions to that account Tax Deductible. More on this later.
Our next Unit game is a Pro/Am. and will be played at 12:30 P.M. on the 4th of May. Come one, come all. We will be pairing up everyone to help keep the field even. If you're a beginner, or if you have 9,000 points, you will be welcome. The higher point people can share some Bridge knowledge with our newer players.
We now have a date for our Unit Membership Appreciation Dinner and Game. It hopefully will be on June 15, which is a Sunday. We will all meet at Fung Lum at 4:30 P.M. for a seven course dinner, and then Bridge afterwards. Directions will be posted at the club. Dinner will be free, and Bridge will be $6.00. The monies we raise from the Bridge will be used to host another event later in the year.
That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.
Happily, It
Was Only a Dream!

A couple of years ago, I woke from a dream in which I was running a club game with the following local players were playing as partners:
Richard James – James Richards
Rosalie Sunday – Donna Monday
Judy Fisher – Bobby Fowler
Norma Black – Tim White
Rosalie Strait – Harriet Rounds
Jo Cooley – Gary Porter
Art Prince – Jeff Baron
Bob Christian – Thomal Jew
Bonnie Beardsley – Clyde Cates
A Game to Remember
by Carole Dietz
On March 25th, Grant Baze played at the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club. He came to play with his mentor, Charlie Dorn. Grant and Charlie have been friends since the early 60's and Grant credits Charlie with teaching him how to play bridge and starting him on his most successful career. The players at the club have always considered Charlie a local treasure and were thrilled to have an opportunity to play against him and his famous partner.
They
were introduced to the assembled group as the "top seed" and, as they
were under pressure to perform, won the event with a 64% game.

E-Mail Subscriptions to the Di-Rek’Tor
Did you know that you can have the Di-Rek’Tor delivered to you via E-Mail? At the moment, the subscription method isn’t very sophisticated. All that is require is that you send a message to me at maravera@prodigy.net . The message should contain your enough information about you so that I am reasonably sure that you sent it. Unless you tell me otherwise, you will get only the “Final” edition in Word format.

You may or may not have heard that the SJBC club computer is now set up to send game recaps via electronic mail to those people who have requested them. The Tuesday Evening directors now do this routinely. Michael Migdol, Will Watson, and I are working to have those same results posted automatically to www.sjbridge.org/results. I am on the distribution list for every club game so, until we fully automate the process, I will be posting the results as soon as I get to them. Sometimes it will take a day or two. I also post the hand records for games for which I get them. Be patient if some of the links don’t work perfectly. If you know the game for which you want the results, you may find the results directly at http://www.sjbridge.org/resultsR0304ddT.html where “dd” is the day of the month and “T” is the time of day (“M”, “A”, “E”, or “L”). Hand records are named similarly beginning with and “H” instead of an “R”.

All games are held at the San
Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except
those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held
at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is
generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose,
but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the
corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for
the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of
the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local
tournaments.
