Prez Sez       by Dan Turkus

A lot of things are happening and 2003 promises to be a very busy year.

Let's be thankful that two of our members have been in and out of the hospital, both with prognoses of many more years of bridge in their lives. Billy Mechanic is already back at the tables. Jeff Hack just got out of the hospital last week. He was in for one full week. I'll let them give you the details.

Our Sectional is coming up on April the 4th through the 6th (Brochures are at the club). How about coming to the Mini McKenney/Ace of Clubs Unit Game on March 30th at 12:30 PM to warm up. If you won your category, you get a free play! This game should provide some great competition.

Soon we will be putting out a monthly calendar of events, that will be posted at the Club so you will know what, where and when the different events will be taking place. The calendar will have local Bay Area Sectionals, Regionals, and, of course, our Unit Games. Thanks to Gigi Spinazzi for organizing this!

If you happen to have your name spelled wrong on the Life Master Board, not to worry, we will correct your spelling soon.

Coming up the first of May will be elections again. We will need to replace or reelect six (6) people. Watch for the Ballot box, coming soon. The new or reelected will be announced at the Unit Dinner Game in mid-June. I'm trying to set the date now, so watch this column, and our new calendar, for the details.

Until then, I'll see ya at the tables.

Dan

Jump Shift in the Other Minor

by Alan Becker

Jump Shift in the other minor is a relatively new convention. It appears under Minor Openings as a red checkbox in the Forcing Raise section and looks something like this:

Forcing Raise: J/S in other minor r

I recommend this treatment as a replacement for inverted minor raises, which is an inferior method.

The Jump Shift responses, 2♦ when partner opens 1♣, and 3♣ when partner opens 1♦, show 5- or 6-card support for Opener’s suit, 12-18 HCP, no 4-card major suit and no obvious no trump bid.

After hearing this response, Opener may explore whether it is possible to play 3NT by bidding the cheapest suit in which he has a stopper. After this, Responder may bid 3NT, show an unstopped suit, or bid Opener’s suit at the 4- or 5-level. The important concept when exploring for 3NT after a jump shift in the other minor is “Opener tells and Responder asks.” One other important note: After 1♦-3♣, 3♦ shows a club stopper.

Also, in an auction that begins with a jump shift in the other minor, a bid of 4 in the other minor is “Key Card Gerber” for the agreed minor suit.

Here are two examples:

Dealer: West        Vulnerable: None

    West                               East

   AK62                      Q3

     K2                       AQ3

KQ7642                  AJ853

                    1♦       Pass     3♣(1)

      Pass     4♣(2)     Pass     4♠(3)

      Pass       6♦    All Pass

1)       5-card diamond support & 12-18HCP

2)       Key Card Gerber for diamonds

3)       Shows 2 key cards for diamonds

Dealer: West        Vulnerable: None

    West                             East

   AJ62                     43

     42                      KJ3

   AQ42                  K7653

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
