At the Regional at the Marriott in Santa Clara, I had several people from the Unit to the North comment on how evil I was to publish in our version of the "Kibitzer," our 5-0 defeat of their Unit. I told them that my reasons were two fold: First: those were, in fact, the facts, and Second: we expect some competition, which apparently was sorely lacking. Yes, I know I said I wasn't going to mention this again, but I wanted you all to know what they are saying, and they apparently do read my articles, which is more than I can say for some of our regular players. (If you are reading this, you are not the one to whom I'm directing the remark). Anyway, they really appear to be genuinely interested in repeating the competition, perhaps adding another Unit or two, to which I said, "Bring them on." Hopefully, this will be a topic again later in the year.
I went to the ACBL Board meeting at the Regional, and discovered some things that I think you will find interesting:
1)
This year's Monterey Regional, though
only 4 days long, exceeded last year’s table count by 73 tables.
2) The
Regional that we just completed at the Marriott, will be at the Dunfey Hotel in
San Mateo next year.
3) ACBL
charity gave money to "Save Lake Tahoe" and The Animal Place in
Vacaville.
4) Apparently
interest in the GNT (Grand National Teams) is waning (thus, the same people
seem to win yearly). Entries are down substantially. If you are a
Flight B, and would like to win a free trip to Anaheim (this year), register
your team by the end of the month.
5) Scholarships
are available to those teaching Bridge to juniors. Apparently, a $500
scholarship will be provided to those teaching 16 hours. More on this
later, when I get all the info.
Would you like to see your daily scores on line at our Web site? We are working toward that end. Would you like to have a link from our Site to your site? These things are coming soon to serve you better.
Our next Unit game will be the Mini McKinney/Ace of Clubs. This is scheduled for March 30 at 12:30 PM. My understanding is if you won your bracket, you get to play for free, thus a game with great competition.
That's it
for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables.
A Case of Unauthorized Information?
by Michael Angelo Ravera
While playing in the Santa
Clara Regional in a 299er event I was partnered with an extremely new player
who opened 1♥. The
player on my right overcalled 2♦. I turned to my left hand opponent and inquired about
their style in overcalling 2 of a minor suit at favorable vulnerability. He
indicated that the expected hand was usually six cards and nearly an opening
hand or a very good five-card suit. I explained that I had asked because many
players would overcall on five cards and a candy wrapper. The others at the
table smiled for a second and I bid 2♥. Our opponents eventually took the contract for 3♦. I forget
the result of that board.
A few boards later, with
favorable vulnerability, I had a 12-count hand with 5 clubs and my right hand
opponent opened 1♠. I
reached into my pocket and retrieved a candy wrapper and bid 2♣. Several minutes later,
after everyone at the table recovered from their laughing fits, opponents bid
to 3NT making
four -- Minus 630 for us, but worth a good laugh!
E-Subscriptions to the
Di-Rek’Tor
by Michael Angelo Ravera
Would you like to
receive the Di-Rek’Tor via E-Mail? Until I work out a more sophisticated
method, please send your E-Mail request to me at mailto://maravera@prodigy.net. Please
include your return E-Mail address, and enough identifying information so that
I can be reasonably certain that the request came from you.
Unless you tell me
otherwise, I will send only the final edition each month and in Microsoft Word
format. If you prefer PostScript format or HTML, that can be managed also. If
you would like to receive either the first edition, or all editions in addition
to the final edition, or one of the alternate formats, just say so in the
request.

If you hadn’t already skipped ahead to the Top Ten as most people do after reading Dan’s column, this month’s newsletter contains more results than usual. Two reasons for this are that almost no games were cancelled and that, in conjunction with the efforts that Dan mentioned in his column to achieve greater currency in the reports, starting with this issue, I am going to report games up to and including the tenth of the month.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center
(408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as
“in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd
Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden
Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the
Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in
Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the
Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are
often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
