Happy New Year!!

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season. Do you remember the movie 2001, a Space Odyssey? I'm still trying to come to grips with the fact we are two years past that already!

By the way, many people have left sweaters and jackets at the club. The leftovers are on their own set of hooks with a yellow sticky note above asking if you own any of them. If you do, you have until January 31 to claim it. Whatever is left over after that date is going to Charity, or should we auction them off?

If you didn't get a Badge when Sherry Waki was selling them last year, and you are kicking yourself for not taking advantage of the great price Sherry got for us, well we ordered so many that the Badge maker said he would continue the low price if we order 10 or more. So, do you want a Badge? Contact Sherry at (408) 244-8662.

Our next Unit game is going to be on Saturday, the 25th of January. It is going to be on the same day as the International Fund Game, but different hands with hand records, and much bigger point awards. You should have received a post card, but if not get a partner and win some extra points. Start time is 7:00 PM.

Save Sunday, March 30th. We are going to have our Mini McKinney / Ace of Clubs awards game. This game rates to be one of the best of the year for competition. We all know that the Holiday Party wins the best food award of the year, or did you miss our great feed?

Did you hear? San Jose 5, Palo Alto 0. OK, that's the last time that I will languish in our team's victories! Does it make you feel as good to read it as it does for me to write it? Yee ha!

Sorry I don't have any results from Reno and Monterey, but I have heard we were well represented at both Regionals, and won more than our share of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Overalls.

Our book exchange is still doing well, and several of the old, old already reads will be leaving, hopefully to make room for more reading enjoyment.

Our next Board meeting is February the 5th at 5:30 PM. Feel free to stop by to express yourself, or have a slice of Pizza.

See ya at the tables, Dan

Conscience Court     by Bill Langlois

If enforcing the rules governing an opponent’s minor irregularity gives your side a big advantage, is it sportsmanlike to waive the penalty? Not at matchpoints. Your opponents’ counterparts at other tables didn’t make the error, so don’t give away their points. An exception should be made for a new player at a club game, but otherwise the matchpoint rule for sportsmanship is, quite simply, “no prisoners.”

Teams games are another matter, but the matchpoint rule applies in the special case of a Swiss event when you’re playing a stronger team and it’s not the last round. Next round, some other contending team will play either you or them, and THEY WANT YOU. This came up in a world championship. In the Swiss qualifying round, the underdog Panamanians were playing a very strong Italian team, when one of the Italian players passed his partner’s cue bid. The Panamanian player doubled to let them get back to a normal contract. The Italians viewed this as an act of true sportsmanship, but other teams in the event expressed dissent.

A frequent situation: your opponent makes an insufficient bid and, when it’s pointed out, tries to make it sufficient in the same suit. Not so fast! You have the option of condoning the insufficient bid. With this in mind, let’s try an offbeat bidding quiz:

At matchpoints, with everyone vulnerable, partner opens 1♥ and RHO undercalls 1. What do you do with each of the following hands? Make the assumption that, if you refuse to condone the irregularity, RHO will correct to 2♦. It’s true that he has other options, but those put your side in a much more favorable position.

Bidding Quiz Answers

1.    Bid 1♥ -- The perfect hand for raising partner to the 1-level

2.    Require correction, then bid 2♥ showing a sound raise.

3.    Bid 1♠ while you still can.

4.    Same theme: Make a negative double.

5.    Pass, implying some values but no good bid. Don't require correction. That would take the 1NT rebid away from partner.

6.    Require correction, then pass. Send partner a strong message that we belong out of this auction.

7.    Require correction, then double. Since you could have doubled 1♦ negatively, this one is real.

Idioter’s Corner

Well, 2003 has dawned and the 1NT announcement is still with us. I am on record as favoring this rule. I mentioned the illegal and unethical Weasel convention as a reason for favoring it. This involves asking the range before taking action when stronger and not asking when weaker. Announcements, when made, make it easy for ethical people to remain that way. The announcement rule has been in place for ten months now. Perhaps, we should legalize Weasel against pairs who can’t be bothered to announce? My belief is that the 1NT announcement is here to stay and that more announcements will be added in 2005.

While I am on the subject of announcements, I often hear a number of announcements made gratuitously that are not currently required by the ACBL. Last March the ACBL mandated the “1♣ could be short” announcement that had been commonly given gratuitously, but was not previously required.

Here is a partial list of those announcements that are often made, but not currently required by the ACBL:

1)    Transfers after opponents’ openers, over your own bids other than natural no trump, and into anything other than a major. 2♠ to 2NT or 3♣ or 3♦, 2NT to 3♣ or 3♦, Mohan, Crazy, and similar transfers are alerted.

2)    Natural intermediate 2♣ and 2♦ Openers: alerted.

3)    Strong artificial 1♣ and 1♦ Openers: alerted.

On the other hand, perhaps ethics and efficiency would benefit from the following announcements that are neither required nor common today:

1)    2-level conventional Openers: The announcements would be something like “Weak”, “Game, natural”, “Almost game, artificial”, “4-5 majors, light”, “4-4 plus majors, strong”, “3-suited light”, “3-suited, strong”, or “5-5 plus minors, weak”, as appropriate.

2)    Artificial forcing second bids: Perhaps, “Asks Suit Length”, or “Game, artificial” would be appropriate

3)    The extent to which a natural 2-over-1 response is forcing: Perhaps, “Game”, “Round”, or “Not Forcing”

I want to hear from those who agree and disagree. I’m told that the ACBL Competition Committee does, also. I will publish their contact information as soon as I can get it, maybe even in a later edition this month.

My thanks go to Stephen Tu, to some of the club and tournament directors, and to the ACBL web site for help with the alert rules. The opinion part is just that.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
