Prez Sez                     by Dan Turkus

Happy Holidays to a really great group of people!  It is truly an honor to be a member of such a competitive, yet caring bunch.  May the Holiday Season bring you and yours what you wish for, and hopefully that will include our Holiday Pot Luck, and some Silver points during STAC week.

Next up is our Holiday Pot Luck Party, this Sunday the 15th at 5:00 PM sharp.  Please bring whatever dish you brought last year.  The menu was fabulous last year, and I look forward to a repeat.  Ray Yuenger and I will be cooking the Turkeys, and the ham is coming from someone else, so you all bring the rest.  I heard there will also be beverages (wine) there as well! I hope to see you all there, so we can break our prior table record of last year.

After that, we have another Unit Game on Saturday night, December 21. This will be a STaC game which awards silver points.  So come on down to that one, too. You are welcome to bring a dish to this event as well, but it is not a requirement

Did you hear???  We beat Palo Alto 5 to 0.  OK, so it's old news, but I like saying it!  I intend to say it again next year, after we repeat!

Keep checking your mailbox for our up and coming events in the New Year.

And have a Happy New Year.

See ya at the tables.

Whoever made those graham cracker deserts for the holiday party that tasted as though they had a hint of almond is kindly requested to forward the recipe for publication.

I/N Lessons Begin January 5
by Faye Parsons with Mich Ravera

Faye Parsons will begin a new series of intermediate lessons on January 5, 2003. At this same time, the Sunday afternoon game will become a regular game for players with 0-49 master points. This will be an opportunity to review the lessons that began in September as a much quicker pace. It is also an opportunity for players who wish to resume Bridge after a long hiatus or who are new to duplicate to play in the club for the first time.

Also, 30 minutes prior to the regular lesson or topics session on the first Sunday and Thursday game of each month, Faye will conduct a clinic. She will give personal help or discuss missed lessons during these times.

E-Subscriptions to the Di-Rek’Tor
          by Michael Angelo Ravera

Would you like to receive the Di-Rek’Tor via E-Mail? Until I work out a more sophisticated method, please send your E-Mail request to me at mailto://maravera@prodigy.net. Please include your return E-Mail address, and enough identifying information so that I can be reasonably certain that the request came from you.

Unless you tell me otherwise, I will send only the final edition each month and in Microsoft Word format. If you prefer PostScript format or HTML, that can be managed also. If you would like to receive either the first edition, or all editions in addition to the final edition, or one of the alternate formats, just say so in the request.

Idioter’s Corner

While playing at the club last night, I ran into Bill Langlois. I mentioned to him about possibly contributing an article to this newsletter. He indicated that he might get back to me and asked whether anyone had commented about either Leila’s article or his about stationary north-south reservations. I told him that no one had said anything to me directly or contributed anything intended for publication. It occurred to me that maybe no one had realized that I wanted to hear anything. Well, let me dispel that myth right now.

I want to here from you, people! This is your newsletter. If you have something to say, this newsletter gives a forum for saying it. The Board has given me broad authority to decide what goes in the newsletter. While I work at their pleasure (read that, “They could fire me anytime that they wanted to”), the Board hasn’t said a single word to me about editorial policy.

Here are a few rules that increase the likelihood of your contribution’s being included in the newsletter.

1)    The article must be attributable. In other words, someone’s name has to go on it. The only submissions that I have declined to publish have been frivolous pieces that had no attributed source. I want the people who submitted those pieces to know that I enjoyed them, but couldn’t publish them without attribution. Frivolous is OK. Keep them coming!

2)    Preference is given to what comes to me already in written form. If you tell me an amusing story orally, I will do my best to co-author it for you, but E-Mail practically insures publication.

3)    Preference is given to articles that are either related to Bridge or to someone or something in the club.

4)    Preference is given to the good and the unusual. Victories, Births, Birthdays, Marriages, and Grand Slams with 22 HCP get full recognition. Deaths and Defeats will get mention, but not emphasis.

5)    If I have to make a space decision, Game Promotions trump cartoons and cookie recipes.

6)    If I don’t see it and don’t hear it, it doesn’t go in! So, make sure that I see it or hear it!

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
