Prez Sez                     by Dan Turkus

Well, you should have all heard about Palo Alto challenging us to a team game with 5 different brackets.  If you didn't, the categories were 0-99, 0-300, 0-750, 0-2000, and unlimited. (Check my last month's article.) OK, enough build up!  Our teams, all five of them, kicked Palo Alto's (your choice of choice words here). Big time! As I have said in the past, our unit is tough! Congratulations to all five of our teams, and thank you all for making my prophecy come true.  Santa Clara Valley Unit 507 has bragging rights in all 5 categories, in fact I heard that our 99ers won by over 80 IMPs! Our unlimited teams won by 17 IMPs, the closest of all 5 matches!

Sherry Waki wound up selling 104 badges! I even bought one, and I wear it around the club and at Sectionals.  Thanks for a great job Sherry!

Upcoming events we have planned are as follows: December 15 is our Holiday Pot Luck Party.  We have the big room reserved, so look for a sign-up sheet to be posted soon.  Let’s see if we can beat the 47 tables that we had last year! Set up starts at 4:30 PM, and volunteers are welcome.

December 21st, that's a Saturday night, starting at 7:00 PM during STAC week, so come win some Silver points.

We are also checking into the Interfund Game for late January, and will be moving our Ace of Clubs/Mini McKenney to March. We are also planning a 0-300 Sectional. Watch this space for exact dates.

About the parking situation: Tuesday night I parked out in the field, and found the ground firm, however, some people tried to block the access by improperly parking. Let's try to leave a lane to get out onto the lawn. We will be talking to the front office to see if they can better mark the way.

Our book exchange is still going great.  Apparently nobody wants to read Newt's book (we have 2), or Kujo or The Trap either. I'm working toward exchanging some of our dust gatherers, pound for pound, with another club.

Congratulations again to our 5 victorious teams. And don't forget to rub it in when you see a Palo Alto player. Our Unit Rules!

See ya at the Tables,

Santa Clara Valley 5, Palo Alto 0

Conscience Court
                        byBill Langlois

Based on long observation, I believe that players in our unit are, by and large, kind and considerate people. However, that belief was undermined by Leila Sink’s article in the October Di-Rek’Tor.

If you didn’t see the article, a player with severe medical problems came to play at one of our club games. Not one unencumbered North-South pair was willing to switch direction to accommodate. What Leila didn’t write was that she and her partner did switch, despite her being full term. This required permission from the director for her to play some rounds East and others West so that she wouldn’t have to wiggle into a seat along the wall.

It’s perfectly OK to request North-South, and some club directors are willing, up to a point, to reserve it for their regulars; they can’t, however, provide twelve North-South’s in a nine table game. For some, staying in one place is a medical necessity (Note. Age by itself isn’t a justification: Charlie Dorn often plays East-West). For most, however, it’s merely a convenience, For example, "I don’t want to drag my purse around all day." In the latter case, refusing to yield to someone who really needs a stationary spot is inexcusable. There’s an old adage about not burning the bridge we may someday have to cross. One should also be willing to accommodate if the director is trying to seed the field, which, in my opinion, would be appropriate for a STaC game or a club championship.

A suggestion to players: if you request a North-South for reasons unrelated to health, tell the director that you’d be willing to switch if appropriate.

A suggestion to club directors: make East-West assignments more desirable by guaranteeing and publicizing that, if a half table happens, the sit-out will be a North-South bump.

E-Mail Addresses for 2003 Roster
                        by George Pledger

As membership Chair and publisher of the new upcoming 2003 Membership Roster, I would like to add as many E-Mail addresses as I can get. I have about 100 or so E-Mail addresses and we have about 700 members. I would like to better than that.

The easiest way to do this is to send your name in an E-mail to at mailto://gpledge2@pacbell.net .

For instance, if your E-mail address is <imon_line@aol.com> unless you include your name, I will not have a clue as to your identity. If you say "George it's me" I still will not know. The 2003 Roster will be published about a week before the Christmas dinner party.

I/N Lessons Begin January 5
by Faye Parsons with Mich Ravera

Faye Parsons will begin a new series of intermediate lessons on January 5, 2003. At this same time, the Sunday afternoon game will become a regular game for players with 0-49 master points. This will be an opportunity to review the lessons that began in September as a much quicker pace. It is also an opportunity for players who wish to resume Bridge after a long hiatus or who are new to duplicate to play in the club for the first time.

Also, 30 minutes prior to the regular lesson or topics session on the first Sunday and Thursday game of each month, Faye will conduct a clinic. She will give personal help or discuss missed lessons during these times.

Idioter’s Corner

An old Asian proverb says that one picture is worth ten thousand words. A more recent American proverb states that the most desirable person in the bar is the one who is carrying the tray. These, coupled with the fact that my frequent partner, Pamela Woods, has just purchased a personal digital assistant that has the ability to take a lot of digital pictures, has led me to want to include more pictures in this newsletter. If I get the pictures from her in time, I will start by including pictures of the game directors in the game schedule. If not, look for them in the second edition or next month. Directors in whose games Pam never or rarely plays are encouraged to send a digital photo that is to their liking directly to me. Excuses that you believe your image to be unfit for publication won’t be tolerated. Just think about how much you would want someone to find you just before game time. More importantly, think how much they would want to find you!

I want to thank Bill and George, and the others for coming through with articles this month. My special thanks go to Ray for getting me the names of the Challenge team members.

In reading Leila’s article last month and Bill’s follow up this month, my first reaction was “What was the big deal? Were Peter and Rose playing East-West?” Is a reserved North-South as prestigious as a coveted single digit Southwest boarding pass? Is an East-West really as bad as getting stuck with the center seat between two fat people? I personally rather like the way that Ray and Neal seat people. It does a fair job seeding the field, allows for some seating preference, and encourages punctuality. (in a manner not unlike Southwest’s).

The Bridge World has lost two superstars in the last few months: Max Hardy and Bill Root. I have learned a lot from both of them. The game is a better one because these two men lived. We will miss them.

Hook the Cat, Ms. Epler!
The Ultimate Cheap Trick
by Don Hayden with Mich Ravera

In a recent Tuesday night game, Norma Epler executed what may be the ultimate in playing coups. With trump drawn and after previously having shown out of a side suit. She played the four from the board. Her right hand opponent, who held several cards in the suit, played the three. She proceeded to discard from the hand. Her left hand opponent played the deuce – A ruffing finesse won by the four! This must have happened before, but I have never seen it.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
