Prez Sez                     by Dan Turkus

I hope you all had a great time at our Fall Sectional. Special thanks go to Lynn Brown, who acted as our Sectional Chair, while Phyllis Vierra went to take care of her mother. Phyllis, we all hope all is well with your Mom.

I would also like to thank everybody that brought treats such as cookies, cakes, roll-up sandwiches, veggies, and who knows what else. These people in part were Lucy Burke, Sherry Waki, Rita Randolph, Dianne Shannon, Phyllis Reinhardt, Maxine Lubow, Eileen Edwards, Marion Wentzien, Lynn Brown, Shirley Foreman, Gigi Spinazze, June McCullough, Sandra Jacobs, Donna Webb, Gail Meikle, Fran Dickman, and Mildred Brewer. Thanks so much to all you above that made this such a "sweet" tournament.

Also thanks to the crew that helped set up and take down all the tables which included Art Fonda, Phyllis Vierra, Neal Webb, Ray Yuenger, Lynn Yokel and the Prez. If I missed anyone, please let me know in person and I will personally thank you. If is all the helpers and contributors that truly makes these events so much fun. Thanks again, you all deserve a big hand!

ACBL news - you heard it here first! Roger Smith and Chris Pizarra were both running for Board of Directors. I got an E-mail saying Roger had over 52% of the vote compared to Chris at 12%. I can only assume there were either other write-ins or some abstentions. You are welcome to use your imagination here!

I'm sorry to announce that Bob Jonesi passed away. He was a regular at many of the daytime clubs, and was always humming a tune. He will be missed. The next major event at our club will be the NAOP (North American Open Pairs). It will be held Sunday, October 20th beginning at noon, and a second session to be announced.

A Wine and Cheese Unit game is scheduled for Friday night October 25th at 7:30 PM. If you like really good Cabernet don't miss this game. I'm in charge of getting the Cabernet, so you will definitely like it. Also a great opportunity for extra master points

On October 27th we are sending five teams to Palo Alto to play for bragging rights as to which Club has the strongest players. It's my opinion that Palo Alto wanted this on their own turf so they wouldn't have to drive too far with tears in their eyes. So all you people who were selected for one of the teams, please make this a prophecy! Good luck to all.

We also plan to have or Christmas Party potluck on December 15th beginning a 5:00 PM. Save the date and watch for a postcard in the mail publicizing both Unit game.

That's it for this month, so I look forward to seeing you at the tables.

Do you need a North-South?

The other day, I requested stationary North-South seating at the club. I felt that this was a reasonable request because I was over eight months pregnant. The director insured that my request was honored.

Unfortunately, there was another player who needed a North-South more.  This player is in a lot of physical pain. This player's partner went around the room asking if people would play East-West because her partner medically needed a North-South. Not one pair was willing to give up their North-South seat for this player.

To be fair, there were a number of other people with physical limitations. But did all twelve other pairs really need a North-South?

Help Me! I’m a Director
                        by George Pledger

I, George Pledger, have just passed the test and have now been certified by the ACBL to be a Club Director. Any help, experience or advice you could pass on to me would be greatly appreciated.

Passing the test I think is just the beginning. Now I need experience in using ACBLScore, setting up games, sit outs, relays and by stands, skips and when and above all, how to solve problems. I know they are in the little book, but sometimes finding the CORRECT answer takes time. Most of you experienced directors seem to know all the answers immediately.

Thanks in advance for any support you can give me.

Well, since it will probably never happen again, and since I just had to tell someone (actually, I think I'm going to tell everybody), ...I don't know if you are familiar with Richard Pavlicek's monthly bidding and play contests on the web, but he has just posted the results of the September contest on the web at http://www.rpbridge.net/7y07.htm

Analysis of these hands can be found at http://www.rpbridge.net/7y08.htm

Idioter’s Corner

It is often said “There’s one in every crowd!” This applies, of course, in any gathering of about twenty or more people. The laws of probability dictate that this must be the case. That is, of course, unless you go to a Bridge Club, in which case, you are likely to find two. I was reminded of this in compiling this month’s game results when I saw the large number of spouses, parent-child, and sibling pairs that not only play in the club together, but actually win together.

While I am on the subject of families (and after reading in Dan’s column about Bob Jonesi), I am happy to hear that Kyra Michelle Helmbold, a frequent kibitzer at the San Jose Bridge Center and at local tournaments in recent months, has decided to join the ranks of the air breathers. Congratulations, to the new parents, David and Leila!

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
