In case you haven't already heard, our Grand National C Team won the
event. Congratulations go to Stephen Tu, Steve Chen, and Shih-Ming Shih!
Also, Ed Barlow was on the Grand National A Team that tied for third. What
a great bunch of players we have at our club!
Did you hear that a lady in Santa Cruz passed away and left her house
(valued at $650,000, or so the story goes) to the Bridge Club in Santa
Cruz? After hearing that, I had a dream and brought it up to the Board
that we should set up a building account, so that our Unit could own its own
building, and have control of our own destiny in the future. Our Unit is a
nonprofit organization, and what the tax implications would be for those
wishing to donate to the building fund, would have to be discussed with your
accountant.
I mentioned this last month, but I am repeating it. Palo Alto has
challenged us to a Knock out event. We are still working out the logistics and
rules for the competition. It looks as though we will be having 5 teams playing
5 of their teams. Preliminary talks hint at the following teams: 0-99, 0-300,
0-750, 0-2000, and open.
We are going to start another Mentoring program. Gigi Spinazze will have the particulars
for those interested in mentoring or being mentored.
Our book exchange is still moving along well. Please put new books on
the far left, and as books make it all the way to the right, I'll see if
someone would consider a pound for pound exchange, thus giving us a new supply.
Would you like to be a Director? Talk to Ray Yuenger, he has an
inside line on a self-study course. Having this knowledge, could give one a
better understanding of who did what to whom, and why a certain decision was
made at the table. More about this is on page three.
For all of you that qualified for the NAOP (North American Open Pairs…
(Those games that cost $7.00 instead of $6.00, and had a bunch of Qs next to
half of the people’s names) our Unit playoff will be October 20th.
Sherry Waki has ordered 63 name badges.
Events coming our way are the Regional in Santa Clara, and then at the
end of September is our Sectional. Brochures are coming soon.
That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables!
Do you have a spare computer at home that the kids
have outgrown? The San Jose Bridge Club
could use a working computer with a modem, if you feel like donating one.
CAROLE DIETZ IS OUR NEW RECORDER
Welcome, Carole, to our unit’s C&E team. We’re
fortunate to have you.
What does a recorder do? To paraphrase the ACBL
literature, she:
1. Deals
with Player Memos (available from the director of the game);
2. Educates
those involved about proper conduct and ethics;
3. Communicates
as appropriate with those involved in an incident;
4. Maintains a record of all Player Memos;
5. Acts
as "State’s Attorney" at disciplinary hearings on charges filed by
the recorder.
Actually, we can hope that Carole has little to do in
her new job. Most players in our unit maintain a high standard of conduct and
ethics (although I wish more would learn to respect the Stop card). However, as
Sam Goldwyn put it, "Nobody’s human." We all slip up now and
then, and sometimes there’s a target. If you feel someone has been rude or
unethical to you, it might be time to involve Carole (or in serious situations,
me). Your first recourse is the director of the game, who should always be
called if an irregularity is involved. However, it’s quite possible that you’d
like to have a matter of deportment handled quietly and privately. Give Carole
a Player Memo. You should also do this if you did call the director but remain
unsatisfied by the outcome.
More often than not, the matter will simply be a misunderstanding for Carole to smooth over. Many memos about the same player or pair might, however, lead to a "pattern of behavior" issue. That’s where Carole’s fourth and fifth duties come in. I’m pleased to report that it’s been seven years since that happened in our unit, involving a player who has long hence moved away.
Joan Simpson’s Brownies are known far and wide
for the taste and texture. A written description is simply inadequate. They are
worth eating despite their high sugar and calorie content. Besides, it is a
scientifically established fact that calories consumed while engaged in a
mental activity such as Bridge don’t count toward the limits imposed by your
diet. Everybody knows that!
In order to obtain one of
these prized brownies, you will have to show up at one of Al Becker’s Saturday
Afternoon Games. Game Time is 12:45 PM. (Doors open 12:35 PM) Don’t be too
early or you will have to wait! Don’t be too late or the brownies will be all
gone!

Can you picture yourself
directing bridge on a cruise ship?
Would you simply like to know more about your rights and obligations as
a bridge player?
It’s easy to become an ACBL
certified director. Classes are
available, but are not required. You can study on your own and, when you are
ready, take the open-book test in front of a monitor (human, not computer). All
the following study materials are available at the ACBL website, http://www.acbl.org The Club Director’s Study
Packet ($10), the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge
($5.35) (also available in PDF format at the web site), Duplicate
Decisions ($8.95), Chapters 4 & 5 – ACBL Handbook
($5.00), Duplicate Bridge Direction ($13.45) by Alex Groner.
The last three items are recommended but are not essential.

It
didn’t take too long after my column in last month’s issue before a proposal to
eliminate the announcement of one no trump opening strength came up before the
ACBL Board of Directors and was DEFEATED. Announcements are still ON. For those
of you who don’t like this requirement, I have heard that one reason for the
requirement was an illegal convention known as “Weasel.” In this convention a
partner asks or doesn’t ask the range of an opening bid dependent upon his
strength. Announcements take away this opportunity.
Sometimes
this newsletter is sparse. This month I had an embarrassment of riches. I
managed to get everything into the newsletter that was submitted to me and
still have room for a column. I found Al Becker’s list of “Don’ts” which
appears on the back page to be not only worth reading but worth studying.
I guess that I am just as interested as everyone else as to what a Recorder
does. Thanks to Bill Langlois’s article, which appears on the front page, I now
know. As always, I thank Dan and Ray for their contributions. If you E-Mail it to me, it will probably get
into the newsletter.
As
far as Ray’s director information is concerned, I was reminded to tell everyone
two things: The first is that we currently don’t have a Friday night game. The
second is that the primary reason that we don’t have a Friday night game is due
to a lack of directors. It is my hope that Ray’s article will inspire someone
to take the Director’s test and pick up the Friday Night Game. It seems that no
one ever really appreciates a director until there isn’t a game. So, let me
exercise my editorial discretion in thanking Faye, Bill, Al, Judy, Carole,
Neil, Ray, Lynn, Jeanne, Janet, Jim, and Anne for keeping your games going.
Without you guys it’s Party Bridge!
Congratulations
to William Reister, Jr. and Ted Richmond for having two games in the top ten
this month. They earned their appearences in consecutive weeks in Bill Traver’s
Monday morning game – The game with the largest number of tables at SJBC! The
Boskloppers also deserve congratulations on their second consecutive appearance
in the top five.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center
(408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as
“in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd
Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden
Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the
Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in
Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the
Special StaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are
often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
The Ten Worst Mistakes That You Can Make
at Bridge by
Al Becker
This is a list of what not to do at the Bridge table. The items are in
order of importance based upon potential damage to your score, your
partnership, your reputation, and, possibly, your wallet.
It is assumed that you know and follow a reasonable standard for
opening bids, responses, overcalls, takeouts, preempts, balancing, opening
leads, and attitude signals. But, in the later action category, don't do it if
it's on this list!
1) Passing
Partner's take out double, especially when you are weak. As an adjunct, passing
any forcing bid by Partner, especially a cue bid.
2) Not
leading Partner's suit against opponents' 3NT contract.
3) Pulling
partner's penalty double when you haven't lied about your strength.
4) Not
noticing, or worse, disregarding partner's signals
5) Not
raising partner's five-card suit when you have three or more cards in his suit
and an extra trick.
6) Making a
bid that can be passed, when you and your partner have game points between the
two you. (Almost as bad: pushing onto game or slam with inadequate values)
7) Sacrificing
when you likely have enough defensive values to set the opponents.
8) Not making
a lead directing double when appropriate
9) Failure to
make an appropriate suit preference or count signal
10) As
declarer making a major goof such as not pulling trumps when you should or not
pitching (or not ruffing) a loser while you still have the chance.
Almost all of these errors occur on occasion including in my own past
partnerships (notice the emphasis on the word "past").
Item #1 by itself, any two of the next four, or any three of the last
five may well put the partnership in jeopardy.
