Text Box: More from the Prez
Prez Sez                     by Dan Turkus

If you didn't eat enough at our Member Appreciation Unit game at Fung Lum, our next Unit game is on July 28th at Noon, and will be Pot Luck. So please use the signup sheet at the club & please bring your favorite dish!    If you missed our Unit dinner, you missed a great meal with 180 people eating!  After that we had a FORTY-SEVEN-table Unit game!  And who was it that said you don't get enough points at these Unit Games?  Well, they should talk to Fang Wu and T. C. Yang who came in 1st overall in both A & B with a blistering 67.57% game, and were awarded 7.79 points for their efforts!  Eric Yang and Peter Kao were First overall in Flight C, and in our under 50 game Fia and Ben Bosklopper were first with a 69%… watch out TC & Fang!

A special thanks to Ray Yuenger, Phyllis Vierra, Art Fonda, Richard Jacobs, & Alex Tampilang for setting up the tables prior to the event, before I could get there. Also, thanks to all that helped take down the tables & re-stack the chairs. Your help and cooperation make all our lives easier.

Your votes have been tabulated (thanks to all that voted and all that ran) for the new Board, and they are: Art Fonda, George Pledger, Gigi Spinazze, Phyllis Vierra, Lynn Yokel and yours truly. We hope to bring you another great year with many challenging and fun events, and thank you all for your support. The Board thought I should follow in footsteps of one of our past Presidents: Franklin D.(must be D for Dan) Roosevelt, and they made me Prez again, so it looks like you'll be reading my columns for another two years.

EASY BRIDGE starts again Sunday, August 4th at 1:00 PM. Thank you Faye Parsons!  Please tell all your non-Bridge-playing friends, coworkers, neighbors, kids, grandkids, and anyone else who can put fog on a mirror about it. New players are what make our Unit so successful!

Badges: Look for an order sheet at the club. The more people that order them, the cheaper they get. It would be really cool to see everyone wearing one at our fall Sectional, or at the Labor Day Regional (if we can get them that fast).

Carole Deitz has volunteered to be our new Unit Recorder. So what's a Recorder?  That was my question too!  She will be available to record irregular or unusual activity that might occur at a game. Such activities might be Psychs, impoliteness, rudeness, and anything else that someone might do to push your buttons. (Making a contract doesn't count, usually.) Anyway, forms will be available through Carole soon. A much clearer explanation is available on the ACBL website.

Mentor Program: Coming back soon to our Unit. We will be posting info at the Club on the bulletin boards soon. New players, please don't be afraid to ask some of our seasoned people to play. We enjoy passing one some of the tips we learned along the way. And do what we say, not what we do!  When you see someone with lots of master points, don't get worried!  Those points are merely proof of a good attendance record, and consistent predictable bidding and card play (that sometimes illusive thing we all attempt to achieve)!

The Friday night game is reopening, look for flyers at the club with details.

That's it for this month, so I'll see ya at the tables!

EasyBridge Returns

by Faye Parsons with Mich Ravera

Faye Parson’s games are undergoing changes. The Sunday late afternoon game will admit players with up to 499 master points. The Thursday evening game will begin admitting players with up to 999 master points. Once the free lessons are completed, the Sunday early afternoon game will be a 49er game. All of these changes go into effect basically right after Labor Day.

Idioter’s Corner

In compiling this month’s game results I couldn’t help but notice two pairs who, despite scoring in excess of 65%, didn’t even win their sections. Melinda Foos and Dan Turkus in Bill Traver’s Monday Morning game on June 17 were edged out by just the narrowest of all possible margins and Leon Lee and Karel Wong in Al Becker’s Friday Morning game on June 21 were defeated by almost one whole board! I have exercised my editor’s discretion in including their names in the results list. These people deserve both our congratulations and sympathy. I was hoping for both pairs to make the top ten, but June, it seems, was a month of high percentage games with three games over 70%. My congratulations go to all of the winners, and also to the almost-winners.

While I am exercising my editorial discretion, I would like to comment upon one of the changes made to the alert procedures this past March. Some people seem to dislike the requirement to announce the range for an opening 1NT bid. To the contrary, I rather like it. What I discovered when the requirement first became effective was that a number of people were simply not announcing their “Good 14 to 17” openers as had been previously required. I am sure that these people rationalized that their range was really within the 15-to-18 range not requiring an announcement. The change has brought these people out of the shadows.

I see at least two other benefits of this announcement requirement. The first is that pairs who play different defenses depending upon the opponents’ opening 1NT strength don’t have to go to the opponents’ convention card every time that they sit down to play a two board round wherein a 1NT opening bid may never even come up. In North America, we aren’t required to read and understand the opponents’ convention cards before we sit down to play. Without the announcement requirement (and other alerts), we may be required to do just that!

The second (and I am certain unintended) benefit is that people have been encouraged to think for themselves about what a good opening no trump range should be. Since the announcement requirement went into effect, I have met many more beginning and intermediate partners who are willing to try weak or intermediate no trump openers because “We have to announce them anyway.”

Like so many other regulations, some people think that it should apply only to those who do something different from what they do. In explaining the difference between an alert and announcement to me Lynn Yokel said it about as well as I have heard it said, “Announcements are to avoid slowing down the game to give an explanation of something that so many people play.” Announcement of opening 1NT strength fulfills that requirement exactly. ‘Nuf Said.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special StaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 499er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
