As of this
writing, prior to your reading this, we have 73 pairs signed up for the Unit
dinner on Sunday, June 30. Dinner starts promptly at 5:30 PM at Fung
Lum. You must sign up no later than the 20th! Yup, that's over 36
tables so far, should be a pile of points to the winners. If you don't
come in first, we'll refund your entry fee and won't charge you for dinner
either!
Also, the
night of the Unit Dinner, the election results will be announced. Thank
you to all of the candidates that are running. One player from a club to
the north remarked on the number of people we had running, and said that they
had to beg people to get on their Board. Thank you all for making it another
great year for our Unit, and all of you on the Board that have gone that extra
mile.
Sunday,
August 4, at 1 PM, Faye Parsons is going to start another Easybridge class, so
whom do you know that would love to learn our game? Maybe you want to get
someone out of the house for a few hours on Sunday afternoon. The first few
lessons are free! This is a great deal (Ed: and a great pun) for all
those card players you know.
Palo Alto
Bridge Club has issued us a challenge. They want to have a Swiss or KO
event: Palo Alto versus San Jose. We are currently working out the rules of the
competition. This should be fun with lots of different
brackets. More details will follow in the next Di-Rek’tor.
Our
library has really grown lately. Not only do we have a great selection of
novels, love stories, cookbooks, we now have a rather large selection of bridge
books. If you take a bridge book please bring it back, after you read
it. I'm thinking of putting dates on the other (non-bridge) books, and if
after a month they're still there, I'll see if another club would like to do a
pound for pound exchange.
Our next
Unit game, after Fung Lum, will be on July 28th, starting at noon and will be a
potluck, followed by Stratified Pairs. So be looking for a sign up sheet
for that game in July.
Did you
hear that Ray Yuenger just hit the half-century mark? Move over Jack Lord,
here comes Ray to "Bridge, five-O". Just another half decade and you,
Ray, can play in the Seniors.
For those who
like the NAOP (North American Open Pairs), qualifying at our club will occur on
October 20th. There will be more on this later in the year.
That's it
for now, so I'll see ya at the tables!
Conscience Court by Bill
Langlois
I recently drew Larry Wagner in the Wednesday night partnership pool. With one board to go, it felt like we were winning the event. No one was vulnerable and I picked up ♠xxx ♥Axx ♦Qxxx ♣xxx. Larry opened 1♦ in third seat and RHO overcalled 2♣. I scraped up a 2♦ bid, LHO passed, and Larry cue bid 3♣. I intended to sign off at 3♦, but my subconscious told me to give him a signoff that he couldn’t countermand. Before I knew what was happening RHO made an opening lead. I looked down at my bidding cards to find that I’d passed the cue bid.
Facing a 2-3 fit, some partners would have detailed my ancestry, morals,
and ultimate destination, but Larry just played the 3♣ contact.
As it turned out, he played it quite well, scrambling eight tricks to tie all
the pairs going down one in 3♦ or 2NT. Better: some pairs tried 3NT and it wasn’t pretty. We scored 11 out of
the 16 possible match points, and the second place pair was impressed by my
bidding judgment.
A bidding disaster won’t often lead to a 69% board, but even so it pays
to be stoical. Points salvaged off the bottom count just as much as those won
by converting a good result to a top. For example, getting out of a silly
contract for down three might pick up a point against another pair’s -180.
Berating partner and slopping cards to "get on to the next board" is
unlikely to achieve anything.
Oakwood Relocation by
Bill Traver
The Oakwood
Bridge club is relocating for approximately six months while the Oakwood
apartment building is being remodeled.
The Oakwood
club is moving to Fairbrae swim club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton
and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Fairbrae's club house is an excellent facility.
Our first game there will be on July 10th.
The Oakwood
club has been going for more than 25 years. Oakwood is tied with two other
clubs as the 2nd largest club in our unit. We welcome all of you and especially
newer players to enjoy bridge with our friendly members.

I want to thank Al Becker and Bill Langlois for their special
contributions this month. I am hoping to have both of them as regular
contributors.
Al’s contribution is on the rules of the game and describes a situation that seems to happen so often that everyone ought to know their options.
Bill’s
contribution is on how you may be rewarded at the Bridge table (and not in the
next life) for not causing death or serious injury to your partner when he
makes a serious mistake.
Bill’s and Al’s
articles together remind me of the time a tired partner of mine once pulled the
♦2 card from her hand rather than the 2♦ card from the bidding box. It took
the Director almost ten
minutes to sort out the proper ruling on that one. To this day, I still don’t
remember the result of that hand, but I certainly do remember the
auction!
I would like to take this space
to apologize to Sherry Waki whose name was inadvertently omitted from last
month’s list of officers. Sorry, Sherry!
While I am apologizing, I
apologize in advance to those people who advanced in the Bridge ranks in the
month of May. The ACBL hasn’t, as of this writing, managed to get an accurate
list to anyone in our Unit. I will put out a revision if I receive it in time
to matter or double up in the July edition. In the mean time, keep advancing! I
would much rather print your name than write a column.

“You
Have Five Choices” by Al Becker
One of the
most common infractions is the opening lead from the wrong hand. The player who
actually made the bid to become declarer has five choices:
A. Accept
the lead and see the dummy.
B. Accept
the lead and be the dummy.
C. Require
LHO to lead that suit, or
D. Forbid
the lead of that suit (for as long as she holds the lead).
E. Have LHO
lead whatever she likes.
With
options C & D, the errant card goes back in RHO's hand. With option E, the
card stays on the table as a penalty card (i.e. it must be played at the first
legal opportunity).
Option E has an interesting follow
up. If LHO leads a different suit, and retains the lead, declarer can, once
again, exercise the option to require or forbid leading the suit of the penalty
card. Whenever a penalty card is on the table and the partner is on lead,
declarer has this same option. If declarer exercises the option, the card is
then returned to the player’s hand.
The
best of the five options is not always obvious. Declarer should think about the
bidding, and other factors. If there is still no clue what to do, a wise bridge
player once suggested that a player who is inattentive or incompetent enough to
lead from the wrong hand is a good bet to be making a poor lead. So, Declarer
should consider accepting (and even letting her partner play the hand). Partner
will at least enjoy the vote of confidence (and may play it as well or better
than you would have.)

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is generally held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, but is temporarily being held at the Fairbrae Swim Club at 696 Sheraton on the corner of Sheraton and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special StaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 299er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
