WHAT’S INSIDE?
I hope you
all won plenty of silver points during STAC week. The last day of STAC week was our Unit STAC game on
Saturday the 11th, with 11 full
tables! And the winners
were NS 1st A Kit Humphrey and her husband Henry followed by 1st B & C Mike
Abrams & his wife June McCullough. Sitting EW had 1st A Neal Webb
& Ray Yuenger, 1st B Richard Jacobs & Hiram Shen, and 1st C went to our
new editor of the Director Mich Ravera & Rekha Nirula. Way to go everyone!
Yes, our
new editor of the Director is Michael Angelo Ravera. Thanks so much for
stepping forward and handling this. Apparently, being the editor is
harder than just writing an article. So if you have any news, give it to
Mich, or leave it in the clear envelope on the bulletin board.
Elections
begin the week of the 15th. If you want to be on the Board, get your name
in the gold box on top of the computer table. Those elected to our new
Board will be announced at our Unit Dinner on June 30th, which will begin promptly at 5:30 PM.
Our next
Unit game is the one everyone looks forward to! After the Unit pays for
your dinner at Fung Lum, we are going to play in the big room over by the
tennis courts (Skate Board Court). Last year we had 33 tables...can we
beat that?? There will be a sign-up sheet beginning in June. You must
sign up no later than the 20th! We really need the head count. We also
understand that some of you would like to bring your other half who doesn't
play Bridge. For the cost to the unit,
you may pay for that extra person.
Dan
(Ed: I’m told that last year’s cost was something like $20.00 per person)

Nicole
(Nikki) started playing bridge when she turned ten years old. During a long
drive home from a weekend away, she noticed the Bridge game installed on her
mom’s laptop. She decided to tinker around with the game and asked her mom to
explain how it works. While in the car her mom explained the game to her, while
she clicked on the different selections available. After three hours of bridge
training in the back seat of her parent’s car, she had learned enough to go to
the club to try playing with real bridge players. Since it was summer, she
could play that next night.
She played at
the club with her mom, and did fairly well. She was so excited because the
first week she played she and her mom placed and she earned her first points.
Now she was really hooked! She not only had fun playing cards, but she gets
awards too. She loved the challenge, yet had a lot of fun.
Every pair
that she played against encouraged her and some even thanked her for coming out
to try the game. They would say to her, “we need young people to learn bridge
to carry on the game,” that made her feel special. When they found out she was
only ten, they could not believe it, and would get so excited when she would
place.
Finding
herself so welcome, not only gave her incentive to come again, but the fact
that she had four hours playing a game with her mom was everything that she
could ask for. Nicole came back Tuesday night, then Wednesday, and finally
Thursday during her first week of play. She and her mom played as much as
possible during her first summer, trying to incorporate all her other interests
in the schedule. Then Nicole found that there were others that wanted to play
with her and she started to play with her new friends as well as her mom.
Once school
started, trying to find time to play bridge was difficult, but she squeezed it
in sometimes on Saturdays or Sundays. Then Nicole joined the ACBL and tried her
hand at her first bridge tournament in San Jose. She found that there were more
than just San Jose Bridge club members there, and many of them would come up to
her and mention how excited they were to have her playing bridge.
Many times
at the club and at the tournaments players come up to Nicole and tell her that
they wished their grandchildren or children would take up the game. A couple of
times they even brought their children to meet Nicole in order for her to help
offer encouragement to them so they too would give it a try.
Even though Nicole is an A student in math, bridge has helped her to
gain additional confidence in math, as well as “think out of the box” and
strategize. Since school is almost out, Nicole (now 11 years old) is really
looking forward to getting back into playing bridge a couple times a week,
along with swimming daily, going to all day summer camp, playing “Power
Volleyball” (Nicole is 5’6 1/2” tall), and going on small trips with her
family.

I warned everyone when they
offered me this job, that unless I got sufficient content from those who
regularly contribute to this newsletter, that I would have to write a column.
I always have plenty to say,
but I will confine my comments to Bridge in general and to the creation and
production and publication of The Di-Rek’Tor in particular.
In this issue, I have
included a “Spotlight” feature from the ACBL’s web site about one of our
members. I would like to thank the ACBL and Nicole’s mother for allowing me to
reprint this feature.
I have also started a new
feature, the Top Ten. This list will be a regular feature, space permitting.
Everyone needs to understand that this feature has no official sanction
whatever, but anyone who makes more than an occasional appearance certainly has
a standing offer to play as my partner! It includes the ten highest games by
percentage of available match points regardless of the strength of the game.
I want to thank the Board for
making me editor, Ray Yuenger for explaining what was expected, getting me
started, and proofreading and Will Watson for showing me how to compile game
results. Thanks also go to George Pledger and Dan Turkus for their timely
contributions.
I plan to make this
newsletter available on the Unit’s web site subject, of course, to the
cooperation of the webmaster.
I would very much like to
hear anything that anyone has to say about this newsletter.
The Di-Rek’Tor is published monthly by Unit
507 of the American Contract Bridge League, Campbell Community Center, One West
Campbell Avenue, Building J-68, Campbell, CA 95008. Opinions in articles are those of the authors and not necessarily
those of the Unit Board.

All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, except those identified as “in Sunnyvale” and “at Oakwood”. The Sunnyvale game is held at 1085 Tasman (2nd Clubhouse), Sunnyvale. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave., San Jose. Check club postings or call for the exact dates and times of the Special StaC and Special Sunday games, and of the 299er Potluck. Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
