September 6, 2000 Minutes of the Santa Clara Valley Unit Board, Unit #507

Dan Turkus called the meeting to order. Members present were Marshall Yancey, Jeff Hack, Phylliss Vierra, Dan Turkus, George Pledger, Art Fonda, Lynn Yokel, Jeanne Becht, Bob Elliott, and Neal Webb.

The secretary’s report was approved as read. The treasurer suggested waiting until after the Fall Sectional to redeposit the money in a CD. The treasurer’s report was approved as read.

Phyllis Vierra’s Sectional report: Dan has a metal box to be used for cash receipts. Phyllis has lowered the price of teeshirts by $4. We need some caddies for Friday afternoon at $25/session. Free coffee and cookies will be provided for all. We need help with the hospitality desk. Sodas will be sold for $.75; the Unit needs to supply 7+ cases. 11 am is the time for the Friday setup. There will be signs posted announcing the cell phone prohibition.

Lynn Yokel: the mentoring program is starting in several weeks. Volunteers will play once a month with a mentoree who will pay the card fees. Faye Parsons is conducting Easybridge classes in January.

Bob Elliott: the newcomer's guide draft is finished. George volunteered to help type it and then it will be shown to the Board for comments.

Bob Elliott and Lynn Yokel had a great Regional tournament in Santa Clara. Mojo made LM while playing with Dan Turkus.

Jeff Hack’s District report: Turlock-Merced is now in our District. The WBF is upping the charge from $.10 to $1/member/year. The ACBL offered $.50, negotiations are continuing. The Monterey regional will take place January 1-6, 2001. The Grand National finals will be held October 28 and 29 in Oakland. Next year there will be no qualifying for GNT, only the finals. Nominations for the charity fund distribution were requested. Tax-payer ID is required.

Jeanne Becht: she sent out 650 postcards announcing the 9-13-00 start of her Easybridge courses, being held 2:30-5:00.

Unit games: there will be a Unit game honoring Rose Meltzer’s win in the Spingold; this was approved by the Board, to be held possibly in early November.

NAOP Unit Qualifying, September 17th , noon and tba: Gary will direct the game. Jim Hayashi will order more bidding boxes for the club.

The next Unit Board meeting will be held Oct 4.
