June 7, 2000 Minutes of the Santa Clara Valley Unit Board, Unit #507
Members present were Dan Turkus, Lynn Yokel, Ray Yuenger, Bill Langlois, Marshall Yancey, Jeff Hack, and Neal Webb.
The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were approved as read with the following corrections: our Spring Sectional in 2001 is changed to March 30, 31, and April 1; the Unit Membership game is June 25, not 18.
The Unit Board voted in favor of holding our Fall 2001 Sectional during Sept. 28-30.
Jeff Hack: a player was expelled for cheating in the ACBL, suspended for 5 years. Unnamed at the District meeting, he was named in the Bulletin. Jeff also suggested some Pro-Am team game ideas: both amateurs and pros playing only each other.
District 21 income is down this year with only $55,000 in cash now. The new D21 website is www.abcl.org/district21 and has a partnership desk. There will be a 6 1/2% increase in fees to the District from the ACBL, since the ACBL has lost $200,000 last year with the attendance down 10%. Jeff was the only Representative present from our Unit. There have been complaints about old playing cards; please don’t throw them away, the VA hospitals want them.
There will be a Swiss team Sectional at Clubs July 10-13. NAOP finals will be Oct 28-29 in Oakland; qualifying, 0-2000 flight B. Next year there will be no qualifying, with 4 flights in GNT teams: A unlimited, Ax 0-5000, B 0-2000, C below 2000. The finals of A and B will be held at the same time, with Ax and C at the same time. A $3,000 charity fund was distributed to 6 charities equally. The D21 800 number has strong support from the new president. 10,000 labels with the 800 number on them are to be given out at All-Western Regional. Starting 1-1-01, D21 fees will be $9 p/p per event, $8 for members with fewer than 300 masterpoints.
Bill Langlois: suggested not looking at partner's face, only at bidding boxes. He inquired about a pamphlet for newcomers. Bob Elliot has written some of it already.
Bill was also curious why so few people were listening to the live band at the Santa Clara Regional. How expensive was that?
Unit insurance: Judy Fisher's agent offered $4 million per person coverage, $7 million per occurrence, for a premium of $225 per year. The Unit Board approved this.
Lynn Yokel: June 25 is the date of the Membership dinner; chicken or spaghetti w/ one meatball are the choices. There will be a minimum of 17 tables, maybe 18. Dinner will be at 5:30 with the bridge game following. The Unit board voted to congratulate Lynn for her work on the Pro-Am. Lynn also brought up the mentor program from ACBL. They pay 1/2 of mentor's fee.
Elections: Lynn Yokel, Dan Turkus, and Bill Langlois were re-elected; Art Fonda, George Pledger, and Phyliss Vierra will be joining the Unit Board at the July meeting.
Easy Bridge: Lynn stated that there would be new courses in September. Faye Parsons is willing to start classes during the evenings and Jeanne Becht during the day. The ACBL will return $200 back to each teacher, with the Unit subsidizing mailings and book costs.
IMP league: Mike Abrams will be organizing another round of this event starting in September.
Ray Yuenger is running the next meeting of the Unit Board, July 5, at 5:30. New officers of the Unit will be chosen then.
