July, 5, 2000 Minutes of the Santa Clara Valley Unit Board, Unit #507
Dan Turkus called the meeting to order. Members present were Ray Yuenger, Bill Langlois, Marshall Yancey, Jeff Hack, Phyliss Viera, Rose Meltzer, Dan Turkus, and Neal Webb.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were approved as read. The Unit still owes the ACBL $59 because of a prior overpayment.
Dan Turkus would like to sign up the Masonic Temple as our Sectional site through Sept. or April of 2002. This was approved by the Board.
Bill Langlois: the cell phone call problem needs to be solved. We can ban them at Sectionals and Unit activities and urge club owners to do so also. The Unit will ban or have cell phones turned off or on vibrate at all Unit functions and club owners will be urged to support this policy. This policy is to be posted at the Sectional site and was approved by the Board, with a 1/4 board 1st offense, 1/2 board second offense. There should be signs at the door and in the flyers. According to Law 74 b-1, players must pay attention at the bridge table. Can Jeff bring up at District Board the possibility of a cell-phone-free zone?
Phyllis Viera’s Sectional report: Jay Magid has been requested as our Sectional director vs. Diane (Jay is cheaper, since there is no hotel room needed). The Woodcrest Hotel charges $89, including breakfast on the weekends. There will be verbal directions to the site on the flyer and Phyllis will print up a list of restaurants 5 minutes away, near Lincoln Ave. and Monterey Highway. The District website also has restaurant recommendations.
Lecture at the Sectional: 12:15 Sat. by Peter Weichsel; Michael's bids and 2 suited overcalls were suggested as possible topics.
Refreshments: buy bottled water, drinks, and trail mix at Costco for resale at the playing site. The Board voted to increase table fees to $7.50. The Fall Sectional is sanctioned, but not the Spring one. Phyllis suggested t-shirts with Sectional emblems $13-17 with $6 profit. She will display one on the bulletin board and take orders. Approved by the Board along with Lynn's 199er trophy again. There will be no door prizes.
Jeff Hack: the next District Board meeting will be Sunday at 9:30 at the Santa Clara Regional. One of Jeff's students was 1st overall in his first duplicate game ever: Malcolm Stewart at the Palo Alto Sectional. The Secretary was asked to send him a congratulatory card.
Insurance: Neil issued a check through Roy Becker? Does our Unit have proof of insurance for the Sectional with ACBL?
The Unit voted for 1st Alternate Director between Jackie Cornfoot and Cole A. Powell.
Jeanne Becht will start Easybridge on Wednesday afternoons. An Easybridge course will be offered at the Santa Clara Regional.
September 17 is the date of the NAOP Unit finals.
